This is all stuff that gets overlooked by people when buying a trail rig. Build your truck the way you want to. I can tell you right now you'll wheel a hell of a lot more than if you have a trail rig. It will be more convenient for you to just jump in and go. No messing with trailers or any of the other bullshit that comes along with trail rigs. You'll end up with higher end parts on your truck as well. The name of the game with trail rigs is "it's just gotta work". Doesn't matter how good the parts are as long as they work. That's why people use spools, cheap ass shocks, and a bunch of home fab parts on they're trail rigs. No sense in spending big money for ARBs, King/Icon shocks, and badass bumpers and driveshafts when you're just going to be breaking shit and the truck will only get driven a handful of times a year. If you build your Tacoma you're going to want your truck to ride good, look good, and perform decent. So ask yourself this. Is saving your Tacoma from a couple of dings and pinstripes worth all the hell you'll bring on to yourself by buying a trail rig? I bet it's not.

That said, the only thing I will agree with that's been suggested so far is the lockers thing. Don't do a front locker with rear LSD. Buy a rear locker first. Wheel the piss out of your truck for a year. THEN decide if you need traction up front. I bet you won't. But if you feel like you do, get a front locker. But ONLY after wheeling with a rear locker for at least a year.

There, there's the opinion from someone who has an extremely capable trail rig but leaves it parked in the shop and wheels they're DD.

Let me just start by saying the original question wasn't if I should build but how and with that being said I just want peoples opinions and experiences to help me move in the right direction. I will be building this truck for camping/commuting/bugging out/exploring and for shits and giggles. I mean we all start with no experience and we all start learning somewhere right?

Spend $1,200 on a low boy trailer because the taco could pull it (sure, won't pull as easily as a diesel but not a big deal) and find a used trail rig for $4,000 and wallah. Set to go.

Plus also saw how upset rich gets over little scratches on his truck= would be dumb to wheel a brand new one and get scratched to shit like all of ours

And last, wheel with NO lockers before even getting a rear locker.

Wow shit got real in here today.

Here's my opinion Rich, it's your truck build it how you want. Personally I'd love to have a trail rig but it's not feasible right now in my life. I've put some money into my truck and have been happy with how it's handle at every park I've been too. Throw on a small lift, some 265/75/16's, sliders, F & R rear bumpers and a rear locker and you'll be able to do a lot of parks with ease. Have fun building the way you want, take your time and mod it right the first time.
