Either MWD or DD. The pay depends on how many tools and programs you know.

    Make anywhere from 120-225K

I know that's a big range, but it all depends on what you know and where you're willing to travel. The directional side is usually the second highest paid guys on location right behind the Company man.

Keep in mind that a rotation is rare, you usually work from the beginning of the well to TD.

Meh..... this is the oilfield. I had 0 experience when I started and just worked my tail off to learn everything I could. When I was an MWD I could make connections, raise joints with the lift, slide, project to the bit, and toss around a 36". Of course all of these things wasn't asked of me, I just did it because it I knew it needed to be taken care of in order to get the job done. Now because of my work ethic I am at a major advantage because alot of the guys here in the office haven't been exposed to what I was out in the field so I have a different perspective of things.

So basically you got a guy with at least have a brain that worked almost 5 years straight without break learning all the functions of the drilling process. I come into the office and it's easy peasy.

When you're back on the rig. Try to ask the DD as many questions about their responsibilities as you can while still be able to do your own job well. Don't ask them if you can work for them, just show and interested and try to learn as much as you can. That was you're still getting paid and learning at the same time.

It will make the transition smoother if you start trying to pick up as much as possible now.

Also, when I was out in the field I'd get asked CONSTANTLY if they could get a job with us. I'm all for helping people out, but I got asked at least 2-3 times a week. It gets old. Most of the people that asked weren't willing to work and learn the trade. By you asking questions and showing an interest it's going to make you stand out, and learn in the process.

If you know enough, and have good work ethic you will always find a job in the patch. Sometimes it'll be the exact position you want, sometimes it won't. But you'll always earn well and if you have a family they will never go wanting. I say give it about 5-6 months of serious effort of learning what the DD and MWD's do. (And I mean the specifics, like what they do, why they do it, and how) Shoot me a message next spring and I find you a spot. I'll quiz you though. Just to make sure you don't make me look stupid.

    Good luck.
