Riding is fun, but don't underestimate the PITA factor around weather; rain, heat, cold, thunderstorms, freezing rain, etc. I have a bike and commute into Houston on occasion, but its not my main transport.

A bike is cheaper on gas then most, but upkeep tends to run a bit more expensive since bke gear, tires, chains, etc. tends to wear out quicker then most car parts. Probably still cheaper, but I have not done the math myself. I just like to ride.

What kind of bike and what size just depends on what you want to do with it besides commute. A 250-300 will move you along the backroads just fine, and can probably handle some freeway. If you want more for some playtime activities, that ends up being up to you. Need vs. want....

An enduro type bike, XR, KLR are great bikes for on and some light off road, and can also be geared up to handle some weather. Cruisers, more comfy. Crotch rockets, more looks and handling. Sport tourers, between a cruiser and a rocket, but might be out of your price range. I have had great luck with Honda bikes, close to bullet proof and cheap to buy. Kawasaki, Yamaha, and Suzuki also have great reliability reps. Get on craigslist and ebay and just look at the bike types and prices, think about riding them on a commute, figure out what tradeoffs you are willing to live with since its all a tradeoff.

Again, keep weather in mind. Rain and cold at 60 mph gets old quick. Wind protection and hand protection are a must for cold weather. I've done 20 mile commutes at 25 degrees, not lots of fun if you dont have good wind protection. Heat can also mess with you, but thats not bad unless you are low speed commuting, keep the wind going and 100 degrees is not too bad.

Huh, thats alot of bs for one post.
