It's fine to disagree. I ride a liter bike, but I don't look down upon anyone riding anything smaller. I also don't give a flying f*ck what others think about me.

I went from a CB250 to an 05 ZX10R in 2005...the 10R came up on me on the way home. I rode it out but was smart enough to know that one of the baddest liter bikes on the planet (at that time which was called the widowmaker) was too much for me. I took it back and bought an 06 636.

I am a huge proponent of someone starting on a smaller bike. What is learned on dirt doesn't usually translate well unto street. Riding friends bike a handful to a couple hundred times doesn't make one an expert when faced with advanced decisions.

Every season it is the same thing, new riders get hurt or die because they were in over their head. It was the same on group rides when the newbs would try to keep up with the seasoned riders. We always told them that everyone rides at their own pace and had plenty of stops along the way. But it always happened that someone would do something stupid while I was riding sweeper; thank goodness most of it never resulted in anyone going down.

These are the reasons why I suggest starting on a Ninja250/300/CBR300R/500R. Doesn't mean everyone will listen and it doesn't mean that those lesser bikes will keep them alive.

    General swagger and pizzazz.
Those 636 are some badass stunt bikes. I started on a CBR600 F3, got rear-ended, replaced it with an R6. Sold that for a CBR600RR, moved trio Europe and got an R1. Came back to the states and bought a 50th anniversary R1 and sold the Honda.

I recommend people start in the neighborhood of a 600 because everyone I know who started smaller wishes they hadn't. I don't look down on the people who ride smaller bikes, but wouldn't recommend their bikes to anyone. If someone were looking for something more tame to start with, I'd point them towards an SV650 or something similar. I also tell those same people that common sense and not cramming their head up their ass is just as important as healthy respect for the bike paired with a bit of fear. Well, that and a good helmet.

It's just a style of bike that was popular before choppers were. It's a cool look that is minimalist and fun to ride (although if it is a rigid it is quite a harsh ride, but you can do it on bikes with a hidden rear shock).

I'd ride the shit out of one!

Your story sounds familiar. I used to be a mod on MH and have met plenty of motorcyclists since I used to go to the meets. That was a few years ago though.

I agree on the SV and Ninja 650.
