Well I got off at 7 this morning and he called at 11. I would have had to be there at 3 so I would have gotten 3 hours of sleep at the most and then worked a 16 hour shift. Fuck that shit. I have no problem working 16s but I can't do it after working a 12 with only 2-3 hours of sleep in between.

That's why I like regular 8-5 jobs. No worries about getting "called in" to work.

Eventually. Gonna pay my dues and weld for a few years. Becoming a CWI is a long process I'm not ready for yet.

The way some welders talk shit always had me thinking that they all make 150K+ a year minimum.
At least that's the loudmouth brag-a-lot types. Oddly enough one of them who used to date a female friend of mine had to borrow 300 bucks to keep his truck one month.

Huh? My buddy took a short course, studied for the exam, took it, passed, contacted another buddy who was a welding inspector and was hooked up with a job.

As a QA yes. QA= quality assurance.
Its pretty much a CWI apprentice. But you have to be one for 5 years before getting to the CWI level.

Plus being a welder before becoming an inspector should be a requirement IMO. You shouldn't be able to tell people how to weld if you don't even know how to yourself. So I'm glad its set up that way.

And yes, welders can make $35+/hr if you're tig welding x-ray quality welds on aerospace/oilfield stuff.

But most welders (like me currently) only make $18-$20/hr doing basic flux cored welding

You can also go weld on the pipeline which is tons of money but a lot of risk as well. Like right now a ton of pipelines are being shut down and a lot of welders are jobless with the oil prices the way they are.
