If you're going to putt around the neighborhood or small towns, a 250 might be fine.* They're fun too; you flop them around after riding a much heavier bike like a 600cc or larger.

* I knew a dude who could outride most 600 riders on his 250. His only limiting factors were sheer displacement and speed. Man, he could wind that critter out though. So YMMV.

If you want a sports bike, in my opinion I think you should start off with a dual sport and start taking it to track-days with an offered riding school. You will have a blast and you will become a better rider. Then after a year or two move up to a sports bike. But keep the dual sport for future track days. It is a blast.
