The idea is that college.is expensive.and it's.not for everyone. Nor is trade school I get that. But in a recession you'll never not need plummers, or electricians etc.
Plus the robots are coming for most of our jobs

    In closing, learn computers

And he's talking engineering degrees, which still seem to be a pretty good value. It's the underwater basket weaving degrees that people get with no plans for the future that are screwing things up.

If you want a trade job that has a possibility of moving up, there's always the railroad. A lot of the senior guys I worked with started from the bottom there. But the schedule sucks. They pay well because they're so inconvenient to work for.

It never is....but I always say, screw you, let me see for myself. Why take someone else's word for it? Besides, maybe they didn't know how to water it. :notsure:

My STEM degree just paid for itself with my new job.
But also, I work my butt off, I present and sell myself well, and I am very driven.

Very true. Either way. A degree only makes you look better in the end and shows youre willing to invest in yourself. As more and more people goto trade jobs or whatever... something has to separate you from the rest and that little resume is what they look at before you get a chance to show em that “you’re willing to be the best”

I know plenty of welders who make $100-$150k. But they also have a $50-60k truck. A 20-30k camper. A $10-15k machine and never get to see their family.

    Or

You can get a degree in something in demand and make that after putting in some time.

So many people say you don’t have to pay for college for certain trades but theirs still investments in both ends. Just depends where you want to invest.

You really can’t go wrong with either. You can goto a trade school and get a welding job in a fab shop making $40k or you can get a degree and make $40k.

I just say don’t be so quick to say college and degrees are a waste of money cause the trade life ain’t all it’s cracked up to be even though I do love my job

    Good points.

However, why make it so cost prohibitive to folks who want to get a college degree?? I'm sure there's plenty of folks out there who want a degree, but financially its not an option. Not a reflection of self investment.

Why does One choose to goto A&M for a degree whenever a smaller college can get you it cheaper? Why should someone teach students for free ? I don’t want my tax dollars to goto a 250k degree whenever someone could get the same degree for $50k.

I’m not saying college isn’t outrageous and borderline rape but as long as people will pay to goto these costly schools, they will continue to charge that. Supply and demand.

The bolded items are things that may or may not be required to do the work. One could get a smaller camper and an older truck and save $$. I used to watch men in the oilfield buy the Laramie Longhorn package and get a new truck every two years, then buy the gigantic luxury 5th wheel camper instead of a smaller one that would suit their needs just as well.

Because the ring opens doors? TAMU has a reputation for being a highly rated engineering school among other things. If all is equal on the resume but the university is different, who will they choose? well depends on the hiring manager (are they an aggie?), but it may provide an ever so slight edge over a "no-name" smaller but more economical school. Worth the extra dollars? Maybe, maybe not, I say it depends on who is reading the resume and picking the new hire.

The college was just an example. Could’ve been UT or Texas state or whatever. Some kids choose to over pay and hope it pays off. The gamble doesn’t always work your way.

I think the for profit schools have hurt a lot of things and the booming business of high interest school loans has not helped. when these kids take out school loans they need to think about how long it will take to pay them off with the job they expect to get. youre right, there doesnt seem to be a lot of foresignt into the quagmire of majors that dont directly translate to employment opportunities or opportunities that can repay what they owe.
