Can confirm, definitely a real phenomenon, tested just a couple weeks ago during heavy rains.

2014 AC TRD OR, ~2" lift front & rear (FOX 2.5's all 4 corners,) running stock 265/70R16 tires on stock aluminum 6-lug wheels, ARB front bumper. Stock air filter/intake setup -- no snorkel.

Hit moderately deep water crossing (say, > 8" to 12" water depth flooding over an asphalt road) at around 30mph, entire windshield gets completely covered in water for at least 2 seconds, regardless of windshield wiper speeds, which is quite a long time when moving ~45 feet per second.

My take-away: In general, don't attempt desert-run / Baja speeds through deep water.

On the positive side: After multiple test runs in the range of 25-40mph, after I got home I opened the engine air filter housing to check for any moisture, it was bone dry.

On the negative side: Hmm, now one or more of the serpentine belt pulleys up front has a mild squeak. Water must've washed the grease out...

I have experienced this as well. It seems to be velocity-dependent: no problem at 10 or under, definitely getting sprayed going any faster than that.

It’s more fun than disorienting for me. I like to think someone is filming me driving by in slow-mo for a Toyota ad.

Tip on snorkel use in this situation: a bottom-fed prefilter is less likely to ingest water than the stock front-fed scoop. The Sy-Klone 9001 is my preference.

Thanks for the input: appreciate it! It eliminates my theory that some special part or baffle is missing up front or underneath. This particular area I'm talking about fills with water in a depression that is there and after it gets to a certain level it runs off down the gutter. It never gets any deeper than 3-4 inches. Hit it and up comes the water and across the entire windshield. You can turn on the wipers, but the sheet of water lasts as long as you're in it and the wipers can't deal with it. You hit one on the interstate going 35 because it is raining so hard (thunderstorm) and it makes your heart speed up. I don't think I have ever hit it one at more than 35mph. When I'm off-road and I encounter mud-puddles of unknown depth, I creep down into them at way less than walking speed. (trauma from bad experience way back in the day... never leaves you)

Also, there is no sign that any of the water that comes up ever enters the engine bay. Everything under the hood always has a little layer of dust on it no matter how much you fuss with it, and no signs of a "rinse" except maybe a few water trails on the piece in the front over the top of the radiator ,

This happened to me a few weeks ago after a heavy storm.

Water was running across the road from a drainage stream overflowing the culvert. I thought it was just an inch or two deep, and drove though a bit faster than I should have.

totally surprised to find 8-10" water, and the windshield was entirely covered for enough time that I used some colorful words.

This happened to me a couple times over the last couple weeks. Once was at about 30mph on side streets. That one was kinda fun. The other was at 55mph on the freeway in an area with poor drainage...semi just ahead of me hit the depression first, and splashed water all over my windshield for a few secs. Pretty scary, I just held the wheel straight and hoped no one was about to merge into me.

i think it's pretty much speed dependent...if you hit it too quick you end up driving into the wall of water you just created.

I'm with you. Based on the conditions people are describing I should've encountered this every day for 2 years commuting to my old job. Maybe it's my bug deflector?

Different tires throw water in various ways.

I can cut right through 3"+ puddles at 40+mph and stay connected to the road with no water on my windshield.

A foot of water? I guess just go faster, so you can ride on top of the water.

Look for AT tires with similar sipes as the pattern on rain tires have.

    Or get rain tires.

I never considered the possibility that the tires might be causing it. Makes sense though. The tires on it were new when I got it, but they are some brand I've never heard of. (Laufenn?) The tread pattern is pretty generic and even though they are marked all season, mediocre at best in rain or light snow. Only thing going for them is they are very quiet. They currently have about 25,000 miles on them. When they get to 30,000 they're going, and I'm putting Michelin's on it. Probably either the AT2 or the MS 2.
