nah dont care enough to even get an eye ache. so what your saying is that there is no real suction then why does things get sucked into the filter or whine when one has a cold air intake or if i put a bead past the filter would it just sit or get sucked in. Stop trying to copy and paste lectures you find

dont use the cruise, easily 1-2 mpg gain. the cruise makes my truck down shift too frequently. try to accelerate gently down hills so you dont have to use as much power going back up them, effecient driving techniques.

i have a 05 dc 4x4 with 3" lift and 285's and 125k miles, and never get less than 20 on the highway unless im hauling

You don't seem to understand that at normal cruising the throttle is only slightly cracked so that is a greater restriction by far than an air filter, clean or dirty. With a dirty filter the throttle plate gets opened a little bit more to accomplish the same thing but is still a greater restriction than the filter.

That's what the study found even at grossly restricted intake.

Rather pointless discussing this with you, I know you haven't even read the study you are bashing.

I find elevation is a huge factor. When I go to the moutains to board it's uphill the entire way and I only get like 14-16 mpg. The way back it's all down hill and I'm getting like 20-22 my math might be off but it takes 3/4 of a tank to get there. Less then half a tank on the way back. Also in the moutains I put it in 4th seems to help a bit. I've noticed slightly better mileage with my cai, plugs and exhaust. I only run royal purple in it that might help I notices after switching to royal purple it runs smoother and I'm sure had a positive effect on my mileage

Biggest factor is how you drive

no so much the elevation..but the uphill and downhill factors.. applies to mountain biking too..i take two energy packets to get up the mountain, and only need one to bomb down. :D

You are correct. The elevation is beneficial to better mpg with lower power and lower wind resistance. I figure minimum 2 mpg better at Boulder elevation if I'm staying in the front range.

It's the climbing hills where the mpg takes a dive.

Been checking my MPG for the last few months...3.4 V6 5 speed...4x4 extra cab. I use medium grade fuel and never go below 20 mpg...most of the time I get 22-23 mpg ( my truck has 50k miles on it and new plugs 3 months ago)

I did a measurement on my round trip to work, which is 29 miles each way, over the 405 pass. On the way there, I had the AC on and there was some light traffic (it was about 1:45 in the afternoon, usually it's much worse). On the way home, I had no AC and there was no traffic ( about 2:30AM). I made a conscious effort to drive conservatively; accelerating modestly and keeping the cruising speed at <2500 RPMs, or just under 70MPH. I only used cruise control on the flats, not over the pass. I shifted into neutral on the downhills that would let me maintain speed.

I got 19.95 MPG, measured before and after at the same pump. I'm happy!

I have to say this, I think you have to look at the overall average rather than tank to tank. My last fill up I averaged 20.5 and only did my normal city driving for most of that tank. Yet just before that I had a kinda low average of 17.8 on a highway trip for much of the tank. Should have been the other way around. But I think it's a difference in the pumps and how full or lack of on each fill up.

any mods? exhaust or CAI i can add to get better mpg. or is all bullshit and i need to drop the cruise control with a light foot.

Missing My Last Tacoma --- Had 11 Toyota trucks in the past and many other Toyota cars too.
    .
Just got back from a trip (GA, TN, KY, WV, OH) and ODO went from 2,100 to about 3,400 miles and changed oil to Mobile 1 at about 2,000 miles (before the trip).

It is a: 2012 DC, TRD, 4x4 and running 92 octane fuel ....

Got 20.4 MPG in the heavy mountains of TN and 22.6 MPG when out of the mountains and 23.01 when on flat ground at 60 MPH ... (on a new truck with a 4x4 drivetrain and running A/C compressor all the time).

FWIW ... This 4x4 mileage is about 2 to 3 MPG lower that my previous 4x2 Tacomas.

Doing 55-60 MPH on flat ground ... feathering the fuel ... with a broken in 4x4 V-6 ... you should be able to hit 25 MPG on a cool day.

Indeed the greatest strength of the auto tranny. T'would be nice to spin at 1600 rpm instead of 2000.

Doing 55 mph on flat ground is good for 22-23 mpg on my six speed. When it's warmer out I can approach (but only once exceeded) 24 mpg.

It's when the diff oils are cold in the winter that mileage really goes straight down the toilet, which for me means getting close to 20 again. It's been so long since I've gotten under 21 that I don't actually remember it. I had to look it up- my last tank under 21 mpg was a fillup on March 8!

Coincidence that my notes for the first tank after that say "first tank grill block"? I doubt it.

Summer blends vs. winter blends from the refineries make a huge difference.I don't care what you drive or how you drive it. I clock mileage on every tank on everything I drive. I can always tell when my frequent fill-up spot gets it's first shipment of winter blend. I lose at least 2 mpg on the winter crap.

My average MPG on fuelly is 16.1, I drive 50 miles round trip to work every day. I usually get just under 17mpg going to Salem and back 4 times a week.
AND, that's lifted 6" on 35's... I set cruise at 65 and drive carefully.

temps are the difference not the gas. Warm week here on same gas and mine goes up by 2. Using cruise in hills will definitely drop it. @ 60 - 70 mph back and forth to work I get 20.4 when warm and 18.5 when cold. Many studies done on air filters and dirty ones have no impact on mpgs. Only thing I notice is power when towing.

On the Ultragauge I'm currently getting 20.2 MPG... of course I'm driving like an old lady to get that number. ;)

    .. '12 4x4 V6

My wife's '12 Highlander gets 18 according to her on-board computer.

    Some more food for thought:
Trip to Mammoth from Redondo Beach a few weekends ago. Stock TRD-OR, 4x4, DCSB, 6spd with Bestop soft-top installed.

On the way to the mountain: 4AM-9AM, 85mph average speed (hey, it was an epic powder day and I didn't want to miss freshies) and 4WD-hi in town.
    16.6mpg

Coming home: 9AM-3PM, 65mph with a few stops in Bishop, Indian Wells Brewing, etc.
    21.7mpg

It pays to be leisurely (and also to be pointed downhill)!

I'd like to see some links to what you've read. I've seen significant drops in mileage on cars with dirty air filters especially in one's with smaller engines. My wife's Subarus, for example, will drop as much as 3 mpg's with a dirty filter and will regain those mpg's immediately with a new filter.
It's logical - engines are nothing but big air pumps. Block off the air flow and you'll be pushing the gas more to get the expected performance and you'll use more gas.
I'm getting 18.5-19 mpg with the cold weather/winter gas. I've only had the truck a few months so I haven't driven in the warm weather but I expect to break 20mpg.

If I go 60mph I can pull 20-21mpg on my 6spd access cab v6 going through the mountains (up and down). If I go 70-75mph I get 17mpg.

    Wind resistance is a bitch.

You guys sre making me sad with all this 20 mpg talk lol. The most I have made all winter has been 15 mpg. I blame the cold winter we have had.
