google it. It depends on what you call a dirty filter. Dirty and totally restricted are different things. It might be a V8 thing. Never notice a diff on bigger motors, not sure about 4 bangers. Never noticed a diff on my Tacoma's either but I take filter out about every 5k and blow it off.

2013 DC TRD Sport 4x4...I've been consistently getting 20-22 mpg every tank since the engine was broken in. I run 87 octane 100% gasoline. My speed (I drive on Route 66 to work and back, 80 miles round trip), is between 45-70 mph.

I think if I were to take this truck on a road trip, I could get it to a solid 23 at least.

Last few tanks, I've gone just over 400 miles on each. Then the gas light comes on.

I have a supercharger on my truck but it has a by pass valve for going down hill. I also have bigger fuel injectors, stock tires and other upgrades, With my stock tires and TRD alloy rims.
I get 20 to 21 high way going 61-63 mph.
The sweet spots for my stock gears were 30-35 mph the rpms are low cause it just shifted. As well as 60-65 since VVTI should kick in.

My best MPG ever was with with 245/75/16 all-season tires and no camper shell. I was getting about 18.5 in town and 24 on long trips. I am a conservative driver in town and on trips I take 55-60 mph 2-lane highways anywhere I can instead of 80 mph interstates (not attempting to get the best mpg, I just like to take the most scenic route possible). If I have to use an interstate I try to stay at 65-70. Now I have a shell and 265/70/16 all-terrain tires and I get about 16 in town and 20 on trips.

I try to avoid the truck-talk with coworkers and relatives who don't like my "pussy truck" and have full-size trucks that get the same or better mpg as mine. I have my talking points to get out of the conversation peacefully:

-My paid-off used Tacoma, plus a whole lifetime of gas will still cost less than their new financed full-size trucks.

-It's the truck I enjoy driving and looking at the most

    -It is way more capable/maneuverable off-road than a full-size

-If I ever want to sell it, the resale value is ridiculously high

-I am under-compensating for my giant cock

I've been noticing increased MPG since I switched from buying the cheapest gas I could find to Shell (KingSoopers rewards). I figure there's got to be at least something to the quality of the fuel that coincides with the increased MPG.

I was averaging better than 20 with the stock 245 Dunlops, on back roads averaging 45-55mph, during the summer. I put the 265 Duratracs on and then we switched to winter blend gas. Coupled with letting it warm up before the AM and PM commutes (until the revs drop below 1000 most days; longer if something unexpected comes up doing the morning chores) and my mileage dropped down into the 17-19mpg range. Also, during the winter I've been taking the highway instead of the back roads (because they've heaved and pitched all to hell) so I've been doing 70 on my way in rather than 45-55.
I feather the throttle when I'm accelerating, let it accelerate down hills and decelerate going up them. I usually let the truck shift around 1200-1500 RPM's, and I coast up to stop signs.
Between with the smaller tires, lower average speeds and the summer blend gas, I was averaging over 20mpg's with every tank. But I haven't hit 20 since then. I'm looking forward to summer so I can see if I can nudge it over 20 again, with the Duratracs this time.

Dirty air filters dont make much, if any type of notiecable difference when it comes to MPG, mainly because the cars computer will adjust for the lower air flow.

And what is all this talk about the type of gas and mpg's. Word to the wise, stop wasting your hard earned money on anything other then 87 octane, if you are filling up with anything higher you are just wasting money.

Here is the definitive study. Found zero loss of MPG with extremely clogged filters.

    http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/pdfs/Air_Filter_Effects_02_26_2009.pdf

Results show that clogging the air filter has no significant effect on the fuel economy of the newer
vehicles (all fuel injected with closed-loop control
and one equipped with MDS). The engine control
systems were able to maintain the desired AFR rega
rdless of intake restrictions, and therefore fuel
    consumption was not increased.

I'm kind of miffed. I used the Techron concentrate fuel system cleaner and it dropped my gas down big time, from 19mpg to 15mpg. It have since filled up 2 times after using it, and my gas mileage is still crap. I never expect this to happen.

Warmer weather or breaking in a new engine? Around here Shell is normally +$.10 so I would have to have definitive proof it is the gas.

Yup, that pretty much puts to bed the so-called clogged airfilter is making me get less mpg idea.

For me and you it does, others see it as a conspiracy since it came from a government funded study.

This air filter conspiracy ranks up there with the staged moon landing debate.

Easy. Put air in the tires when on the highway, drive it like normal person, not a kid on steroids, and realize YOU DID NOT BUY A TRUCK FOR MILEAGE!!! In the event you want mileage, I have an 03 VW Jetta Diesel that gets 70 after I reset the pump timing and hollowed out the cat.
