I figure I should throw my review in here..

I had the lock mount from hi lift and mounted it on the bed rail on the passenger side. I probably should have painted it a little better after drilling the holes for it but it kind of cracked the bed rail. I guess 1st gen bed rails are not very strong/thick metal. Took it off and just have the hi lift in the back of the cab until I can grab a bed rack from BAMF.

All in all I would probably not get that mount again. Might be ok for a different application but I wouldn't trust it on a 1st gen bed rail.

A friend gave me an old Land Cruiser roof rack that I tore apart and made a mini bed rack for my Tacoma a couple of weeks ago. It holds the Hi-Lift, shovel, CB antenna mount, plus camping gear when needed and also leaves the bed free for cargo underneath. I plan on adding a light bar eventually for backing up in the woods at night and maybe blind a few tailgating douchebags that don't know when to back off! IMG_20150626_143513307_HDR.jpg ;)

    Thread revival here:

I am looking to build a Hi-Lift mount for my bed, I like the idea that @TacoBran had but I'm also very intrigued by the idea of retrofitting a set of 2nd gen bed tracks. Thoughts? the main draw of the track system is because the lip on the bed rails is pretty thin stuff, the track system might help spread the load. Hi-Lifts aren't the heaviest thing out there, but they aren't exactly feather light either. My main worry isn't about the Lip on the bed rails holding it, but more about how it will stand up. Plus, there are a lot of different accessories that i could add/make down the road if i added a track system.

Interested to hear what people think. I'm planning on calling the Toyota dealership later today to see how much it'd be to buy a set of those things. I know the dealership is always overpriced but they're so damn hard to find.

    thoughts?

This is what I ended up doing. Ignore the two slots that are currently unpopulated. Not sure what I'm going to mount there yet.

I like that, but sadly I have a Line-X spray in bedliner. Prolly the only negative about it;). At the moment, I think that i am going to go with the idea of retrofitting a set of 2nd gen bed tracks. I like the flexibility that gives me. plus i can switch sides if i so choose.

@razhick4x4, here's mine. Just made some custom brackets and attached to the side with riv-nuts. It's actually quite strong.

I wouldn't go and try to adapt a 2nd gen rail to a 1st gen. The beds are different, and honestly, I don't really think the rail systems are the bees knees anyway.

Some bent metal, some shitty welds, and some bolts. Done.

yup, i just heard back from the dealership and the rails are going to be about $60 apiece . yeah...no thanks. i like the idea, but for not $120 plus hardware. i do like the rivet idea, nice and easy, small holes, and looks clean. out of curiosity, what do you think about just anchoring it to the bed rail? i know it's not as strong but i'm leery of drilling holes in the bed... then again, i guess a few little 1/8" holes is a small price to pay for the convenience of a mounted hi-lift.:notsure: we'll see, a hi-lift is on the list after i finish my sliders and get the wheels and tires bought. at that point, i'll order a Scangauge and a hi-lift, as well as a couple of lug studs to build the mount. i've got the rest of the materials that i need.

I think you can clearly see I don't really care what my bed looks like, lol, a few holes don't bother me...

I'm more of a function over form type person. At least so far, it's really worked great. Even if you add in the cost for the riv-nut tool, the stainless riv-nuts, and the stainless hardware for the brackets, I still spent less on these than commercial ones.

I don't think just bolting to the bed rail will be strong enough, though. It's pretty thin material. Part of the strength with mine comes from the triangulation of the bracket.

out of curiosity, do you think i could get the same result just using plain rivets? i know it's not quite as convenient as using riv-nuts, but i've already got the rivet tool and probably enough rivets to finish the job. of course, if i wanted to change the placement i'd have to drill them out, but that doesn't seem too bad.

    thoughts?

I would think so, depending on the type of rivets you have. I used stainless riv-nuts.

I think the tool I got was like $40 maybe, and a load of stainless riv-nuts off Amazon for another $20 or $30. Well worth it, I've used it several times since, too.

which american flag cutout did you use for the rear window? Still think that wrap is badass!!

*edit: Also to stay on topic, what do you guys think about mounting to the top of an ARB bumper?

If it's in front of the grille it can damage your grille if the jack takes a hit. Unless you have very solid mounts. Still, I would not like that. I've seen some that mount on top of brush bars and the jack sits above the hood. Seems like it obstructs the view for height challenge people like me.
