So use 3rd gear at 90-100kmh? This can't be good for the powertrain can it?

Sport mode doesn't control downshifts, it only limits the highest gear the truck goes in. If the truck thinks the gear is too short/tall and thinks it will stall, it will shift on its own

First of all S stands for Sequential. It's not a manual shifting mode, you set it in the max gear you want to allow your truck to shift into. 5 keeps it out of 6, 4 locks out both overdrive gears. It still shifts as normal. Yes, you can simulate a semi-auto by shifting up at high RPMs and down at low RPMs, but it really isn't one. If you are having issues just put it in S4. I do this from time to time when hauling loads and still get 19 MPG pretty regular. It cuts down on shifting on hilly terrain. ECT PWR is almost certainly enough to fix your issues unladen though... Otherwise just get used to the pedal and you wont have issues. Don't get the issue people have with revving their engine to move. If you wanted to go fast at low RPMs then you should have bought something with more torque like a diesel.

I do it all the time. These powertrains are designed to rev high.

It's more controlled when you down shift yourself at 30-40% throttle rather than letting the transmission down shift on its own at 75% throttle the way it does normally. I climb an 8% grade everyday going to work. I just climb it in s3 instead letting the truck shift itself every 5 seconds on the way up.

I hate driving over Parleys in my truck. Trying to keep 65-70 is not possible. 5th won't hold and 4th screams....back and forth...back and forth. I have Shift Sense Pro and it doesn't help at all in that specific speed range on inclines. I'm looking to re-gear in the near future.

I do the 4th gear scream on Parleys and it’ll hold 80 mph as long as there isn’t any traffic. It’s when I get someone in the left lane doing 65 mph that I get the hunting. If that happens I go to S mode and 4th.

From my experience, it drives fine. The Tacoma obviously lacks torque at lower RPMs, but hey... It's a V6 gasser.

I commute up a 7% grade (1,200ft elevation gain over about 2.5 miles) with a 65mph speed limit daily. If I try to stay in 6th, I can't even hold 50-55mph going up this grade. 5th gear, I can't stay above 60mph. 4th gear is made for this grade. I can easily hold 65mph in 4th gear, granted my RPMs are around 2800. 4th gear will get me up to 70mph, but my RPMs climb closer to 3000. I don't think I've ever had to drop to 3rd unless it was to pass a really slow vehicle, where I wanted to get up to a higher speed and pass quickly.

My previous Tundra had similar characteristics. 5th gear could *almost* get me up the entire grade in the 60-65mph speed. It would drop to 4th in a few of the steeper areas, or hold in 4th if I kept the speed at or above 65mph. The Tundra had better pedal control and a 4.11 axle ratio, which made the climb a tad more driver friendly... but the RPMs were very similar.

Yes, the occasional minivan will pass me... But that minivan is screaming at 3500-4000 RPMs and up/downshifting all the way up the grade to hold 75-80mph. Our Tacomas could do the same, but that isn't my driving style and I have no shame being passed my a Chrysler Pacifica.

I have no idea how to drive this truck uphill or downhill. I'm fine on level ground, slightly level ground or slight up/down hills with or without tailwinds in excess of 10 knots.

Also, what size tires can I fit on this thing? Will going with bigger tires help me go up or down hills?

    TIA

Bigger diameter tires will make you faster downhill just coasting compared to smaller tires, I know that

But the trade off is that they will make me go SLOWER uphill - correct?

Another question, I ate a ton of sauerkraut on Friday and now my truck smells like swamp ass. The dealers says they all do. I am convinced that Toyota is trying to screw me over, and that Sweers and Lentz are spying on me while I shower. Last stupid Toyota I'll ever buy. Here I come Subaru!

I just towed over 5k pounds of pavers today, first time with a load like this (and probably the last), I used ECT, put it on S4(first time using S4) ...i had to go up a few small hills, it definitely struggles pretty bad, you have to push the gas to the floor and then she wakes up and rpms shoot up but just momentarily to get up to speed, other than that it was smooth doing 40-45mph at 1,600rpm and 11.5mpg on 285’s :D... putting it in S4 seemed to be the trick to help the transmission deal with the load.....I didn’t get on the freeway at higher speeds with this load so I can’t compare
