It actually tells you to switch to S mode in the manual on hills and towing but no one reads that anymore...lol.. I find that I have to shift the tacoma auto more than any other auto transmission I have owned in the past, but once I followed the manual to match the conditions, it performed better.

I drive a manual...Usually when I travel uphill I just keep the pedal to the floor in 4th gear. I can go 65 like that. Sometimes I have to downshift to third if My tools are in the back. I just have a 4 banger.

Never Never Modify! Keep it aggravation free!
Glad I got the 2.7 Auto. Its got great power, but occasionally I can notice the drive by wire issue. No issues on steep inclines either.

4500 RPM or more to go anywhere remotely resembling a hill. Get used to it or spend the 1000 buck to make it better. Or trade, that's what I did. So much happier now.

You have to be preemptive (taken as a measure against something possible, anticipated, or feared; preventive; deterrent:
a preemptive tactic against the ruthless tacoma transmission.)

If its a auto have the ECM re flashed , mine was made June of this year and has no shifting problem. I like to run it in S 4 in to and hilly areas and S 6 on the open road. Mine runs really hard and is quite fast for a Toyota Tacoma.
