It is not plastic. It just hardens with age.

I’m ecstatic that you called them clowns.

That’s been my go-to ‘term of endearment’ for a while now and I love it.

The dealer is in Montgomery County, MD

    do the belt yourself.

they have to do an alignment when they do the frame. call em out on that..

the valve cover gasket.. i'd be tempted to let them do that. they should be able to get you a deal on it, as they are tearing the truck apart. a proper swap includes pulling the engine and transmission, although some leave the engine and transmission hanging in the body.

    good luck either way

I'm not a mechanic but I do know that changing a timing belt. You have to fix everything so it won't move. It will throw it out of time and ruin your engine

Speaking about dealer scams My truck did not come with intermittent wipers. I was quoated $707 to but in a new motor and a new switch. All I did was pay $50 for a switch that came off a wrecked Camary . I now have multi speed wipers.

Book time (timing cover gasket) is ~13.0 hours plus parts at a likely labor rate of 120-150/hour.

Oh, and by the book there a 106 steps from Toyota to complete the job.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
That depends on if it is an interference engine or not. This particular engine has a chain.

To clarify, [as far as I know] this quoted job is not for the timing belt. This job is for the timing cover gasket.

As another member just posted, the 4cyl motor has a timing chain, which makes sense as I believe all Jap 4cyl motors made within the past 20 years have timing chains, with the V6 motors staying wit timing belts due to excess noise caused by having a chain go to a second bank.

I think your wrong the v-6 4.0 has a timing chain. The v-6 leaks at the area above the power steering pump right near the access panel for adjusting the chain. I don't even think it's a gasket rather its sealed with an rtv sealant.

Hey torspd, I know you know these motors like the back of your hand. I thought a read a post of yours where you talked about using a jb weld type of product and applying it to the leaking covers exterior without pulling cover off that would seal the leak. If I'm wrong I apologize but if so could you reiterate the procedure. Tia
