How bad is a stock TRD offroad?

    1. Pro's have had the sunroof since the 2018 or 2019 MY. If it's not for you then opt for a used MY that didn't offer it. Regarding the sunroof shattering, I've been told time and time again from tint companies that the expansion and contraction of the glass can cause it to shatter, especially if there is a scratch. Most places near me will refuse to tint the sunroof because of that.
    2. I would just weld on a new exhaust. I don't imagine an aftermarket muffler could be blamed for any warranty issues you may or may not have.
    3. The noticeable difference for me was the way the shocks felt. I prefer the Fox shocks over the Bilstein's. And I was a huge Bilstein fan before ever driving the pro. If you get a chance, try another test drive and pay attention to the difference. Had I felt that 4 years ago, I would have got the pro back then to be honest.
    4. Both vehicles can do the same. The pro has a slightly better approach angle. That's the only difference in terms of where they can and can't go. But from the way it sounds, you won't be taking it anywhere where that is a concern.
I know you'll probably continue to hear this but get what you want. What will make you more happy at the end of the day? I had a 2017 OR and loved it. Big reason for my upgrade was to get TSS for the kids that are just now starting to drive. MGM is a good color, regardless of trim level. I almost got one until I found my AG.

I think the deciding factor should be how much you value Pro’s factory installed shocks and cosmetic stuff like hood scoop, grill, etc.

You can get everything else is in a OR from the factory. My OR has leather, led driving lights and a sunroof.

    A few.
You can get a TRD Pro without a sunroof if you buy a used 2017/2018 model. That was supposedly the reason Toyota didnt offer them in the earlier years becuase of the body flex involved when going offroad.

The OR is the best truck since..... sliced bread. Now the Pro however, is the.... bees knees...!! Tough choice....IMHO

Three things keep me from ever wanting a Pro:

    Mandatory sunroof
    Mandatory scoop
Short bed only.... seriously, why no Access cab Pro?

Even if money was no object, I would still get an OR and get a custom tuned suspension from accutune for ~$4500 instead of paying the $9k for the factory fox's, leather and hood scoop. If you care about leather and hood scoops, I guess take the plunge. The only thing that matters to me about the Pro is the suspension, and it is far from a $9k suspension. OR is the value winner hands down, and the suspension is nice and floaty if you aren't adding any weight.

TRD OR gets you way more bang for your buck. Most of what makes the Pro a Pro is cosmetic. Functionally it has a different suspension (which many people say reduces brake dive, but that's about the most major difference people point out although I'm sure that's not the only difference), different wheels (which you can order and slap on an SR if you want), and a better skid plate.

The rest is pretty much just cosmetic. You can get a sunroof, dual climate, remote start, leather seats, etc on the OR. With the Pro, you're mostly paying for a name badge.

The stock OR shocks are too soft for moderate off road without going really slow and accepting a fair number of hits on the undercarriage. The sun roof brings the headliner too low for proper readjustment of the seat with shims to make it sit like a truck and not a recliner. When you find an exhaust that eliminates the wanna-be bad boy drone at anything above 2,000 RPM, let me know.

If I might offer some unsolicited advice: don't spend the money swapping your hood for one with a scoop. As you know, the scoop isn't functional, and it actually blocks a little more of your vision (or sight-line) over the hood. Combined with the low seat height in the Tacoma, the scoop isn't a great option for off-road driving. So in my opinion, you are spending money to get a worse product. Of course it is your money, and if you love the look - go for it. But take a Tacoma with a scoop for a test drive and see what you think. I bought a Sport (because I wanted a manual transmission with the Access Cab, and that wasn't available in the Off-Road or Pro trim); at the time of purchase, I had the dealer swap the hood with a scoop for one without a scoop! Best wishes with whatever you decide!

Get the one you really want, don't "settle" for an Off Road if you might regret not getting a Pro later.

    Yeah.
What makes it a Pro is mainly the suspension, not the badges like the Off Road drivers here would have you believe. My last Tacoma was an Off Road, and the shocks were the weak point. Not bad, just not great. Even swapped to Bilstein 5100s and it was better, but not like the Pro. My current Tacoma is a Pro, and I am happier with the ride and suspension, which is the main reason I went with a Pro.

That said, it is really no more capable off road (unless you are doing extended runs on washboard roads at speed). They are pretty much the same truck.

If you really don't like the sunroof and exhaust and are fine with the way it rides, I'd say just go with an Off Road and swap the shocks when you wear out the OEM ones. For off road capability, the best upgrade you can do is tires.

Can't go wrong with either one. If you don't want a sunroof, then it's an OR for you. I'm 6'1" and there are no height issues with the power driver seat that started with MY20. I think that both look great. I did add a TRD beefy gray skid plate and also red TRD center cap stickers to my stock OR wheels. I do like the Pro scoop, but I don't see myself ever adding that.
