Well it looks like it punched through here so I would say very. A flathead can probably shove it's way through Shouldn't you still qualify for the frame replacement? I would look into it pronto

When I talked to a Toyota place about warranty, I was told that it was out of recall warranty. Apparently they did a rust proofing coating while the previous owner had it, but no frame replacement.
It’s not all the way through in that spot. It seems to be fairly surface rust.

Yeah that coating is pretty useless.

Double check yourself that you are out of the warranty period. If you are, then start hitting the rust with a wire wheel and painting it with por15, Eastwood internal frame coating, and fluid film every Fall.

    ^all of this

Its not too far gone, clean it up, treat it, and continue with maintenance annually. If the almost hole becomes a hole have it repaired and carry on. The key is to address the rust and corrosion now before it gets worse.

I pressure wash my frame every spring and spray it with rust proofing (Krown, Fluid Film, Rust Check, etc) Don't forget to drop the spare and hit the rear of the frame, inside of rear bumper, lube the spare tire winch thingy and check the spare tire pressure.

The welds, back of the welds and lap seams will need the most attention, they seem to develop rust first.

This is exactly the same spot where my truck failed back in 2015 and got a new frame...

Yep, tried to punch through with a screwdriver. It’s pretty solid.

I’ll look into all of that, thank you.
Don’t have a spare down there since it won’t fit a 33” tire in the spare holder, so I don’t have to worry about that.

That doesn’t look good, there’s not much you can do but chip all the scale off.
Wire wheel it, paint it, and coat it. It’s not going to be fun.

How many miles are on it, and how long do you plan to have the truck.
Those are the questions I’d ask myself.
Then decide how much work I’m be willing to put in to “saving” the frame.

The recall warranty expired years ago (2016), so the Toyota place was technically correct. I know, because I missed it because I confused 'May' for 'March' on the recall notice (tiny print). Then the Class Action Suit was settled, and I was eligible again!

So, what you're interested in is the Class Action Suit Settlement, which was originally good for 12 years from 'in service date', but I believe has been extended. Someone here will know for sure - I stopped following it closely once I got my frame replaced in 2018.

There are lots of threads on TW about Frame Rust Recall this and Frame Rust Recall that. It's not a recall! It's a class action settlement. But people just seem to like to say 'recall'.

Anyway, look into the latest terms, and if your 2008 is still covered, demand a frame replacement! It is SO worth it!

It’s 12 years form the date of first use.
You were not past the 12 year date in 2018.
Technically it wasn’t a recall, it was a replace if necessary.
To qualify for replacement , there had to be a hole in the frame that meets certain criteria.
@Muddinfun probably knows the specs, and where to look.

I did not qualify for the replacement. I live in TN were we don’t typically have rust issues.
I did qualify for TSB Springs. Which just happened to be the same time they inspected my frame.

    Again, OP.
You are out of date. There little to nothing you can do about the rust.
I hate it for you man, I really do.
I didn’t even qualify for a frame treatment.
And to be honest, I really don’t need it.

Didn't they extend it a bit? Or maybe that was just for older models. I fear OP might have just missed it. I hate it for him, too :-(

    95-04 was 15 years, IIRC

    05+ is 12 years

The class action lawsuit extended the 05+ frames to 12 years from date of being put in service. My 2008 was put into service in May 2008 so my 12-year extension just expired a couple of months ago. By now it's got to be all 2005 to 2008 trucks will be aging past their extensions since the 2009 models probably started showing up August 2008.

ETA: It's too bad the OP didn't check a year ago because I bet it wouldn't have taken much of a strike with a ball peen hammer to get a 10mm perforation for a new frame.
