looks like all surface rust to me, that’s not bad.

If you want to take the time to restore it, wire brush, fresh paint and then fluid film it twice a year and you’ll be good.

What about the parts that I cannot get a brush into or paint? Such as small crevices or parts directly touching rubber and whatnot? Won't those just continue to rust until they're eaten away?

I really wish my 2013 4runner was that clean haha. Even with regular scraping, brushing and fluid film applications, Pa salt sucks!

doesnt look bad, but Id really inspect the welds and areas right under the door area. mine didnt look bad until i went under and really started to clean it. and eventually put a needle gun to it. previous owner looked to have painted over the rust. I eventually was able to get the frame replaced by toyota under the recall.

I sue a paint on product that goes on milky color and turns shiny black as it coverts the rust, I never sand anything, just do a hard wipe to clean it with a rag, paint on the converter, and repeat if necessary before my annual Krown treatment. It reallt has done a great job limiting the rusting, despite the WNY salted roads. There is no magic bullet, per say, as salt is nasty and they keep throwing it. You have to do the same and treat it annually.

also, POR15 is great for rust treatment and prevention, along with fluidfilm for upkeep. i'd recommend wire brushing, and using the POR15 cleaner and prep spray with the kit, and coat it with the POR15.

My suggestion is to power wash the undercarriage. Let it thoroughly dry. And then apply POR15.

I agree w the surface rust assessment. But get a ball peen hammer and tap around especially those creavasy areas you ask about. You’ll get a better understanding of the condition.

Where was it first put into service?

Toyota has a frame serving campaign covering the Tacoma for certain states. If it’s from one of those states, you have to do it in order to be eligible down the road should there be any sort of replacement campaign. Alternatively, you can take it on yourself as has been suggested.

    Good luck!

If you find anything with that ball peen keep your mouth shut that you where ever even under the truck. Just call playing really dumb. But you’re not going to find anything on that worth worrying about.
