In my younger years I wouldn't have even looked at that.

With kids in the back I'd be a bit more cautious.

It's hard to tell from the pics and I'm definitely not saying it's good/bad, but I'd take a harder look at it and make a judgement call based on how deep it really is.

Since you say your spare is shitty I'd swap that tire with the spare and get a new one. That's just me.

If its E rated you are fine. I have a friend thats been running 3 E rated Mickey thompson MTZ's on his woods rig/daily and they are DEEP. Zero issues because of the ply.

Your slice compared to his is like a paper cut on your finger to a machete chop anywhere bigger than your finger.

Shoot some superglue in there and hold it closed until it bonds? Assuming you've decided to keep the tire, that may help prevent further degradation over time.

Replace. Life is short why risk making it shorter? It's only money and money is replaceable. My .02

Truth, couple hundred bucks is nothing compared to blowing a tire at freeway speeds and killing yourself or another person or family.

I wouldn't ride on it too long. Even if it isn't too deep, it's been compromised and will most likely weaken with time.

Watch everyone tell this guy he is fine and then we find out he died from a blowout. I remember visiting a friend in Georgia a couple summers ago and watching an old Dodge pickup flip off the highway going 80mph and roll three times before it stopped. We pulled the two little kids out of there while we waited for an ambulance to come open the door for their mom. By a miracle everyone was pretty much okay, but hey man don't fuck around with that.

    Get the new tire.

1965 I had a tire with a much shorter cut, it lasted for months, then suddenly went flat. Granted tries are made better today but the sidewalls are much thinner and more flexible.

I was very lucky, earlier that day I was hauling butt on a curvy road along the pacific coast. That evening driving straight at 35mph I heard a pop, tire suddenly went flat. Asked a tire dealer if it was warranted against blow outs? The replacement tire was fairly cheap after being pro rated. From my past experience I would replace it. I could have gone off a cliff if the tire blew a few hours earlier.

I will be putting on my snow tires sooner than later so i will be able to inspect from the inside. What should i be looking for besides the obvious hole through the tire. what would make you feel comfortable still driving on this one.

Sorry Trucko, it's the loss of integrity that is the concern. And a sidewall is difficult if not impossible to repair.

one last question. I bought these tires at discount tire and bought the additional road hazard warranty for the just in case moments. My problem is the closest one is over an hour a way and i was curious if anybody know what their requirements are to get a tire replaced tire before i make the drive down the hill and show them what happened.

When you said "and I have two little boys" I think you realized what you need to do. That is not a superficial scratch and it's on the sidewall. Don't risk this - give up a few meals eating out and get a new tire. Best of luck...
