    1. Are you hand calculating your mileage? Because the trip computer is lying to you about your mpg since you're not running a stock tire size (it's ~7.5% off.)

    2. The Nitto MT in 285 is a 70 lb tire. The stock tires are ~35 lbs. So you're slower and your MPG is worse although they look great.

    3. Are you managing your energy or are you using the gas pedal and brake like a toggle switch?

Get a cheap daily. Trucks are inefficient by design and the Taco doesn’t get the best mileage among them. I get 18-20 in my Taco which is a 8 mpg increase from my lifted f150 and is great. This is insignificant compared to my girlfriend’s Corolla which gets closer to 40.

I get around 20mpg on 275/70/18 tires, with the OVtune set up for performance and a camper shell. I also do a lot of driving with the ECT on as well as my freeway drive to/from work has a few hills and it helps out.

If you don't have a speedometer calibrator when going to a larger tire size, something like a Hypertech, then your speedometer is reading wrong, as is your mpg. You are likely getting better mileage than you think, though it's still probably not that good considering the shortcomings of the 3rd gen Tacoma. Like a couple others, I suggest a tune!

I have an inline Hypertech calibrator and honestly, my mpg when I went from stock wheels and tires to a slightly heavier wheel and e load 285/75/16's was really not that much difference - it definitely dropped but by less than 2mpg. Add 2"-3" in lift and it'll drop about another 1mpg-ish.

Definitely the most effective thing for mpg - with the added bonus of making the truck drive like a champ!

Buy a hybrid and realize the tacoma isnt a fuel efficient mid size pickup truck take it for it's worth. 265s ,cold air intake all the gimmicks . Still won't get "decent" mpg.

You see that skinny pedal on the right side of the driver side foot well?
Don't press it down so hard. Be gentle with it.

I broke my truck in slowly. I am now at about 3500 miles and the mileage is actually getting noticeably better. Of course I also have a stock truck and try not to exceed 65 mph when I am on the highways, which isn't often.

But seriously though, I've never owned a vehicle that was so dependant on my driving habits.

I have a Alucab canopy Camper mounted, 500lb in the bed, E rated tires and a 2 inch lift

    If I drive like I'm retired I'll average 19mpg.
Drive like a 16 year of with his first truck...11mpg

I have the instant fuel mileage guage in the main display of the guage cluster just to keep me in check

going back to stock will be the most effective way to gain back the 4-6 mpg you lost.

I got 21 mpg yesterday on a 300 mile interstate drive. Stock height, 265-70-16 Revo 3 AT tires, cruise set at 70 mph and a OVTune. Thats the best I've done. Seems I get 2 mpg more now with the tune since I was riding around with ECT always on before.

Cruising at 70 means just about everyone passing me, but I OK with that.

    Absolutely!

Toyota didn't spend thousands of man hours and a million dollars on designing an air/fuel management system specifically for the Tacoma, a generic PVC tube and a big oil soaked cotton gauze filter from a dubious source will double your mileage, add 20 horsepower and make panties drop off supermodels within 50 feet of your truck.

It's important to remember the complex network of sensors measuring air flow rates, air temperature, exhaust gases and the accompanying software is just a gimmick, they just put that shit on there for no reason. It certainly isn't a precise air/fuel management system designed to work together in unison, especially the air box they just stuff whatever fits under the hood.

The truth is, no one has ever been concerned about fuel mileage, so no real work has been done to see if it could be improved. I think you're on to something here.

Do the 3* cam gears fit you 3rd gen'ers? Everything I've seen reported is an average of 1-1.5 extra mpg after install.
