I don't know how many miles you have put on the truck, but if it is still new, take it easy for the first 6000 miles or so, as the transmission will learn your driving habits. Don't stomp that gas pedal, etc. I did that, and the results don't lie. I will attach pics. I usually get between 25-30 and mostly 30, when I am flying down the freeway if the ground is level. now, as soon as I hit a slight uphill grade, it temporarily DIVES down to around 10-mpg, but as soon as I get back to level ground, it goes back to over 25mpg. Around the town I live in, because the speed limit is 25 mostly all over town, and because I took it easy for the first several 1000 miles, it goes into 4th gear, and at 25-30 mph, I am getting 25mpg and it also goes up to 30 unless I have to stop at a stop sign, and the gas goes way down until I get back up to 25mph. I will attach pics.trdgasmileagetownandroadcombined.jpg

With his lift and tires + assuming heavy aftermarket wheels i dont think he will get close to 25... best he can shoot for is 20

!6-18 6 manual and tops of 24 interstate on a good day bone stock. My old 2.7 was just slightly better. Had an old 87 Toyota motor home with a 22RE maybe 10 on a nice flat road. It's a brick with the profile of a wall. If you want economy a truck shouldn't be your first choice.

So, I think after four pages there isn't much to add, as most have already said what can be done, but I will reiterate that wheels and tires make a huge difference. Trail grapplers are terrible on road compared to, for example, terra grapplers and your 285's make it even worse. Not sure what wheels you have but lighter wheels also make a difference. A bed cover also makes the truck more aero and the sport spoiler will help as well. The next thing is weight. Again bigger wider tires are a problem. You could go with the 255's everyone talks about on this site, that have the same height but less contact patch, which means less friction and because they are not as wide they weigh less. Also get an AT not an MT

Wanted to add that gearing actually makes these trucks work harder, so getting better gears like 4.88's will likely improve your mileage as your truck is working less to get to speed and stay there. Hunting for gears uses more engine power.

Do you need your back seats?:D

Drive less. Learn to consolidate errands with your commuter route. Bicycle to the grocery store. Take up hiking instead of four-wheelin'. And get rid of the lift.

SSO hybrid bumper, Warn winch, RCI skid trilogy, RRW sliders, everything in the cheap/free mods thread, and of course the frame recall work.
Get a 1991 Bronco with a 5.0. Drive that a while, then your Taco will seem to be getting significantly better mileage. Worked for me! 17MPG looks pretty impressive after 9MPG.

Drive flat or downhill routes, don’t haul anything, coast when you can (If MT), accelerate slowly, avoid stop and go traffic.

But that’s not fun, sometimes you’ve got to haul stuff, lift and tires look cool, downshifting to decel and then going through the gears swiftly to accelerate when the light turns green is fun, and some of us have waited a long time to ride around in a truck like this!

    MPG is overrated...?
