I would say the 4.0L is more reliable then the 3.4L IMO plus the 4L is chain driven vs belt driven on the 3.4. I know thats not all it takes to make it more reliable but I prefer a big chain then a belt.

I have owned an'89,'92, and '06. Now I have a 2011. The '89 and '92 trucks were bulletproof. My nephew owns the '92 now and it's still goin strong. The overall quality of the '06 truck was nowhere near that of the '92.('92 was one of the last years made in Japan I believe). The '11, I 'm sad to say ,is not built as well as the '06 to me. Don't get me wrong, I really want to love this truck. We own nothing but Toyota's and have for last 20 years with one exception,we owned a Tahoe for a few years. But our Camry and Corolla's seem to be built better than my truck.
I just don't understand what has happened to Toyota quality.:(

I cant say anything about the 1st gen meaning I never had one, but after owning a 2001 GMC Sonoma highrider I can say the 2nd gen Tacomas are top quality in midsize trucks. Ive worked on both my trucks and friends vehicles (Frontiers and Rangers) and I can say from the materials used to build the tacomas to how well the tacoma is put together you wont find a more quality midsize out there I guarantee that. I know the 1st gens are well made trucks Im sure but they are also a simpler truck. Buy an "American based company, foreign built truck" and see...Tacoma's are well engineered (both gens) :)

Can you explain why you feel your '11 is not as well built (ie are there things in particular you have experienced that indicate it as such)?

You need a new blower motor resistor. Not uncommon for any car. Use the search feature and you should be a ble to find a step by step to fix it without a trip to the stealership. Save time and money...

My older bro 2001 4runner is rock solid. Bought brand new and have 250,000 miles and still drive it like it's new. I mean this fool takes it for long distance drive every other weekend. I mean absolutely nothing is wrong with it. My 1995 camry still drives like new with no squeak or blower motor squeak. Hell, even the ac is even twice as cold. Too much plastic inside. If you take a look at the top door panel, you can see the surface uneven. Sliding my fingers across I can feel the warp. But so far nothing major.

    Chose Tacoma for:
    Quality, mpg

    Chose 4x4 for:
Sure footed traction every day, everywhere.

    Chose Regular cab for:
Price, maneuverability (I am not that good of a parker but getting better), looks cool, don't mind roll up windows Manual Tran or bench seat.

Mine is brand new but it really seems to be well thought out and well put together; an honest truck.

I have not owned a Toyota until 2006 model yr.
Before that it was VW's Passat, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Acura Integra, Dodge Durango.
I never had a car or truck ride on the bumpstops until this one.
A truck that doesn't have decent springs?
Out of warranty? Tough shit...you bought a Toyota and that legendary quality....buy and install airbags if you don't want to ride on the bumpstops for the rest of its' life.
That's the beginning of my rant but all I have time for, right now.

Sure,I'll try at least. When I got my'06 one of the first things I noticed was that the fit and finish was not as good as my '92 was. Mostly little things; coin holder crooked and would not shut properly, center storage box latch broke at 37000 miles, paint and metal seemed to be much thinner. 2011 truck has the door issue as discussed in this forum, doors also have that "light,Tin" sound to them, paint seems to be able to scratch with your finger nail, thinner material used in rear bumper, etc. I know a lot of the things that make me feel this way is purely my opinion. I do love the truck and I think I would still buy a Tacoma over other brands. It's just disappointing to be such a Toyota fan and feel this way. I am also comparing to quality of a 2009 Corolla,2010 Corolla, and 2011 Camry.
However, one of the best things I do love about the '11 truck are the TRD seats, most comfortable seats I've ever had in a toyota truck.

I would rather push my Toyota than drive a GM.

I feel Japanese take more pride in their work ...than AMERICANS(sadly). The comment you make on unions is no different in bigotry and ignorance than your favorite sexist or racist comments.
Not that i really want to belong to a union, unions ,in part, are made due to poor management/ leadership , but I do belong to a union.
There is plenty of shoddy work, poor service from non union labor in America. Are you man enough to sit back and total all the crap work and realize, it really is union and non union combined ? No , i doubt it.
If I'm not mistaken , isnt the labor force making American Toyotas non union, i believe they are not UAW? Where I work , we end up fixing plenty of work , non union work either did wrong , or didnt finish. It is costing the taxpayers, but in the wonderfull sphinctor lock on the cranium , they simply choose to blame who they want. Pull you head out and see its not a union phenomenom , but a Nation phenomenom. Forgive me if im late in a further reply ... ill be out there fixing shit that people run over , or some upstart contractor did wrong.

When I go to dealer to buy the Tacoma, I ask the sales how come the 08 and 09 model same price with more feature come with 09, so the sales tell me you pay what you get, think about the price, they have been cut corner some where and make the sale price low! I total agree with that! But I still buy the Tacoma, because I love it!

Or it could be high resale value, or a dealership that doesn't know its ass from a hole in the ground... Or, we can take what the sales person tells you at face value and chock it up to "declining Toyota quality".
