Doesn't really matter which trim you have, if you end up in deep snow or mud the factory tires are going to be your biggest issue.

We have crappy paved roads, I like the pot hole suspension of the OR, but went off roading with a 2wd for years. You get stuck you get unstuck.

For years we could only get the double cab in sport or sr5 trim here in Canada. Those trucks have seen plenty of action offroad and survived. Ask any farm kid who’s cruised back roads, fields when they were growing up if they had lockers, probably not.
If your into the rubicon trail that’s a different story.
I’d buy the Offroad if I was buying today.

The electronic brake booster is worth the upgrade from the Sport to Off Road alone, then there is the fact that the Off Road doesn't ride like a shopping cart down stairs on washboard roads since it has a more forgiving suspension and higher profile tires. Automatic Sports also have a smaller rear end.

If you plan on taking your Tacoma off pavement on any kind of regular basis the Off Road is the only rational choice.

Good point. Although the Kevlar tires had a bit of grip, they didn't compare to my Duratracs. They even outperformed my dedicated winter tires on everything but the ice.

So, the brakes on the sport are not worthy of off-road use?

As far as the suspension, people replace their shocks every day. I don't think anyone who does a lot of off-roading is on the stock shocks.

The pedal feel on the off road is superior to that of a traditional vacuum assist. It's better on and off road in all situations.

Saying you'll replace the shocks negates the only potential valid reason to buy a Sport over the Off Road. The Sport's stock suspension will feel better on smooth pavement. Once you change that there is nothing better about the Sport for daily driving.

Ok. But, just because the brakes and shocks on the OR are better for off-road use doesn't mean that a Sport can't go off-road as you suggested earlier.

The original question wasn't "which is better for off-road use?", it was "how many people have done any offroading with the TRD Sport while it is still stock?"

I'm sure plenty of people have off-roaded in a stock Sport. The stock tires and lack of real skid plates on both trims will limit it more than the suspension or brakes.

I didn't mean to suggest that a Sport can't do the majority of trails that aren't dedicated crawling playgrounds. I was responding to a question about the differences and wanted to point out that the Off Road has features that people often forget when comparing the trims and at least 1 of them applies to pavement as well as off road.

I also wanted to point out that the Sports stiffer stock suspension and lower profile tires are a detriment over the Off Road on washboard dirt roads, which are many of the fishing and fire roads Sport owners often claim they perform just as well on. The Off Road is going to be significantly more comfortable here and significantly more capable on difficult terrain.

I can agree with that. The off-road definitely does have some advantages and to be perfectly honest I did not even know about the brake booster.

Tires and understanding when to air down helps a lot. Snow, mud, sand, or sand under the surf I’ve never been in a locker situation yet, also knowing how to get myself un-fucked with as little as a hatchet and or shovel and the materials in the environment helps a lot. But then again off-roading has been apart of my job for about a decade now so I’m not inexperienced to say the least. Learned lots of tricks from the olds boys along to way so maybe that’s why I feel 4-low and a decent set of tires is all a fella needs.
