Yeah, I just went Jeep to off road thrash. 2016 JKU Rubicon Hard Rock package.
It's still expensive toy but I see people pay as much for Can-Am side by sides.

Not really, I think you miss the point that the majority of posts are just good natured jabbing at fellow Tacoma owners

Ok, would spending that much to make it an actual driving machine make you one?
    :).

That is the best Yugo I have ever seen. Now, if someone spends the money to make a Rhenault like that.....

    Check build thread!
It would make me an idiot, but I'd be a rich idiot, and I'd be fine with that.

If I would have known the difference I would have bought the off road model. I have traveled quite a few trails in my sport. I would like to have the rear loc kers and crawl control for sure. I can't say that not having the OR package has kept me from going anywhere as of yet.

My old Nissan Xterra was the X model, came w lame wheels, no locker. But by the time i was done w it, it was more capable than the offroad model. Between that and driver skill, doesnt matter what model, just at leaat get 4 wheel drive.

If you plan to upgrade, doesn't matter what you get. You save a lot of money cheaping on Trim level in the beginning though. Just get whatever's cheaper and then upgrade to suit your adventures. /thread.

Almost agree with that. I would have to weight the price difference between the SR and the OR. The rear locker and crawl control on the OR would be worth something to me. If I end up changing the gear ratio anyway, and who knows?, then the SR for sure would be the way to go. I do like the way the sport looks.

Man, to think of all the hellish trips I took in a Gen1, SR5 4x4 DC with open diff. Remember one where it was raining so hard, roads were so impossibly muddy, fifty miles of that crap, and I made it out to deer camp. Did not see anyone else out there for 3 days until things dried up a bit. Had I known an open diff wasn't capable of off roading anything more than the occasional dirt road, I'd of stayed home!

Yeah, I've got a TRDOR now. Not needed to get back out just about where ever you'd want to go. But yes, the reduction in wheel spin and speed when navigating some things is nice to have now. And maybe a couple fewer times unspooling the winch.

This pic about 40 miles back in after things had a couple days to "dry up". That was the best section of road going in or out.

    FB_IMG_1496949112639.jpg

Breaking 6" to 10" of ice crusted hard snow for days and days, a few hundred miles, and not another vehicle in sight pretty much the whole week long trip.

    Picture 024.jpg

Took a bad line here and slid off into a ditch on this one and got high centered. Locker would not have helped. Only way out of that one was a winch or a helluva lot of digging.

    Picture 017.jpg

Open diffs are plenty capable for the average joe. A sport with the electronic "limited slip"...even more so.

Enjoy your truck, get out there, and don't worry about what it is not supposed to be able to do.

I've said it before, if I had a choice, locked rear and no winch versus a winch and an open diff....I'm taking the open diff and winch every time. Then again, I often go out alone, and am not crawling over obstacles while being 18th in a line of 40 vehicles, so being able to self recover is BIG for me. Locker or not, at some point you're going to get stuck...and sometimes stuck hard.

Having said that, these days it's a locker AND a winch. :D

Would shock the old man driving a 69 K5 Blazer with open diffs, and his buddy driving a 76 FJ40 with open diffs back in the day that those vehicles were not capable off roaders! o_O I do recall the "posi-traction" guys back in those days used to brag theirs were better though...only to get left behind by an open diff FJ40...

I’ve had my 2017 out to Bonneville Salt Flats, Nevada’s desert, some PNW and in Wisconsin. It was completely stick but the tires were Dueler Revo 2’s

Can’t wait to see what my new 2021 6 speed manual Sport with the stock Highway tires will do in the mud, sand and rock in 2 weeks!
    3BFBCEA7-F3D8-4CAF-A7BE-D761046DAA79.jpg

I’m sure one of the half dozen Off-Roads (Off road Tacomas and off road 4Runners I’ll be with can pull me out of those situations. Lol
All the people saying blah blah locker. I’ll never use it. If I do I probably F’d up!
I’m sure I’ll hear it’s better to have a locker and not use it….. I went to fleet farm yesterday and bought .45acp ammo. They also had boxes of .380 on the shelf for a gun I don’t own. I was told to buy some because it was better to have it and never use it! I bought 2 extra boxes of .45 instead!

Most off road owners buy the off road and get new tires and wheels! They rip the stock suspension off and “upgrade it”

Pro owners rip the Fox suspension off and sell off the “Pro wheels!”

Just buy whatever you want.Add A air locker for $600!!!!

Is this the Friday dumpster fire thread?

lots of sport copium going on.

If you are going offroad often and want to do some sketchy trails, you want a locker.

Level dirt roads can be done by anything. Try a soft sand climb out of a beach camping spot. You'll want every advantage you can get.

My friend with open diffs and same tires has gotten stuck a few times in areas where I was able to crawl out. Having a rear locker matters.

Will you be able to do 99% of the same stuff as me without a locker? Sure. But those 1% moments matter.

Being serious, if you’re in a situation where you might find yourself with a wheel in the air, the locker is probably worth having. Especially if the sport and OR cost the same amount at time of purchase.

In my case, I go elk hunting every year and need to go uphill on some pretty badly rutted roads. The locker allows me to get up the shitty spots on the hill without too much effort. I’ve had to snatch strap my buddies 4R up the same hill since he doesn’t have a locker.

With that said, if you’re not going to be in a situation where you have a rear whee in the air, it’s probably not necessary. The OR & the Sport are 99% the same in most situations.

Before this 3d gen, I drove a 2001 OR for 15 years, loved it!! This one plenty capable, goes everywhere I need it to go, but like others have stated, I would of gone with OR, but the sport is all they had at the time, and totally satisfied!!
