How common is the 3.91 rear?

I'm looking at swapping the diff's (front and rear and actually, probably just the ring and pinion) in my Taco for a set of 3.91's. I've got a 2000 model and from what I understand, most Tacos, T-100s and some Tundras without the electric locker all use the same differentials. Any idea how common the 3.91 set is or what make/model year combo I'm most likely to find it in?

Also, is there any danger in using a used ring and pinion from a different vehicle, assuming it passes an inspection?

    This should help

I have seen the decoding tables for Toyotas and that is a huge asset when looking for one. I was more interested if there are many out there because I mostly hear of Tacos coming with 4.1, 4.3, 4.56, etc and very few are down in that 3.XX range. I hate to go looking for a set if they only exist as a code on a table!

I had a Silverado with 4.10's that was nice and a Sierra with 3.73's that was terrible driving at highway speed. It wanted to shift on the slightest incline. I wouldn't go below 4.10's unless you stay below 70 mph. Just personally preference though.

Manufacturers are pretty smart, they match the gearset to the engine. The reason you see so many 4:10, 4:56 gearsets in Toyotas is because they don't have much low end grunt(torque). Gearsets down in the 3's will give you more topend but will compromise towing and hill climbing. My old Buick electra had a 2:56 gearset but it had a 430 cu. in. torque monster that I once used to tow another car with a seized engine to try and unseize it, hardly noticed it behind me except for the squealing tires. I also took a look thru the local scrapyards and it seems every 1st gen sold up here had 4:10 gears so good luck.

I really like the 4.10 in my PreRunner. . .Good acceleration, great hill-climbing, with the 3.4 V6.

Yes i think this is right sort of..

Most 3.4L manuals came with 4.10s as i understand it. Mostly just prerunners i thought came with th 3.90 gears.

most 2.7l 4x4s manuals i believe came with 4.30s and if it was an auto with 4.56.

again tho..i have no real way of confirming this, just what i have read and noticed talking to people..

yep that's mine. Non trd I want something in the 4 range...31x10.5x15 tires don't like hills or acceleration.

Thanks 98taco27, that's the sort of thing I was looking for. Now, if only I could find information for other years!

My '00 Taco is a manual, 2.7 and has the 4.3 gear set in it. Possibly, when they changed things in '01 they also changed that or mine is the oddball, tough to say.
