I used to have 5% limo on my fronts and I got two tickets for it. The cops gave me shit about how it was the only law that was there to protect the officers lol. That was back in highschool and they said that no amount of tint is legal.

    GAHH ok....enough.

OP, if you want to tint your windows do whatever % you want. If you want to keep legal then the tint CAN'T obstruct more then 30% of light. Which would then lead you to having no less then 70% of light going through.

material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied in or upon
the vehicle that obstructs or reduces the driver's clear view

That is what I was cited for. Nothing in there about 70% or anything like that.

70 percent is a standard window. The Chevy van I drive at work has 70pct etched in the bottom corner, which is like no tint.

    +1

To add, i've been pulled over for having a strip of tint across the top of the windshield on my old car, which was actually less than 4" thick.

So many people focus on the amount of light that is aloud through, but were the law bends you over is based on how REFLECTIVE it is. So even if you had 80% (Lets 80% light through on the front) the LEO can still get you on the reflectiveness regardless of the light that gets through.

How many LEO's carry the device to measure, maybe 1%. How many judges believe a LEO has the eyes and ability to judge your window tint unless proven wrong with measurements, probably 100%.

Tinting too dark on the fronts really does make it a pain in the ass to use your side view mirrors or glance over your shoulder at night.

If you can make the cop think "I wonder if those front windows are factory or aftermarket tinted", chances are you will not get pulled over for it.

ETA: I am not a lawyer, most people chiming in probably aren't lawyers, and if they are, will they represent you free of charge? Cops aren't lawyers either, they hand over evidence to a DA who is a lawyer. Never ask a cop about the law, always ask a lawyer.

    AND Read Snowgods link!!!!!!! seriously!

    V C Section 26708 Material Obstructing or Reducing Driver x2019 s View

Material Obstructing or Reducing Driver’s View

26708. (a) (1) A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows.

There is so many loopholes in these dam laws just keep your windows above 50% and you should be fine. We can go on for hours but it really don't matter if the cop wants to right you a ticket they will find a reason. Just about all of us on this site have something on our trucks that we can get ticketed for.

I don't think that tintcenter.com link (and the 70% number) is up to date. It says 1999 law on it and I believe the CVC excerpt others have posted is newer than that.
