How deep in water can a TRD OR safely drive?

Anyone that has a boat knows the damage water does to the rear brakes and even the spring hangers over time.
So the mid hub rule is OK but if deeper and you get stopped/stuck think of all the rotating axles etc where water will start intruding thru the seals and the dirt/sand intrusion.
Then there is if into cab too deep as carpet and wiring and ECU in pass side kick panel and that gets wet you are not moving.
AC compressor is low down too. Then as others said the vents.
Overseas the Hilux is a diesel and diff frame until the new 24 model.
The Air intake is in the top of the pass side wheel well so get that under its over.

The highest water I've driven my AWD Nissan Rogue through (with seemingly no damage) was above the license plate and fog lights. Other than having to pull branches and a limb from out of my frame and suspension, the bath was probably appreciated.

Toyota makes Land Cruisers too, so the Tacoma should be able to do the same stuff.

 

I’ve seen videos about the Hilux. Tacoma is like a HD Hilux so…

 

Better rule of thumb... If you are looking for a home it what is designated as a flood-prone area, or High risk Fire, or anywhere near Freezing weather - for more that a couple of hours, or where hurricanes, tornadoes, cyclones, Tsunamis, etc. occurr, then keep looking... (or move!).

It will likely get worse as insurers become more risk-averse and properties become uninsurable. Look at what is going on in CA, FL, etc. Good luck selling at that time.

They ain't no ''Son Of A Land Cruiser'' like the original Mini Trucks. I had the last year of the solid front axles, great trucks EXCEPT the bed seam started rusting in less then 2 years and the only way you could really fix it was to pop the spots, dig out the crappy seam sealer [HAH!!!!] and spot it back together, then lead it in.

I would like to take the second to point out a snorkel has an entirely separate use from just keeping water out of the intake. But the always over looked factor is dust. My air filter lasts far longer with the snorkel or raised air intake. It is also cheap insurance from water ingestion when things go south. Lessons learned from my second gen.

I don't do any excessively deep crossings and yet my intake looked like that.

 

TRD Offroad or Not - This is my ROE for water. In ANY Vehicle!



I add on about 1" to get me to the top deepest part of the bottom of the metal wheel. So if the tire is 7.3" to 7.9" tall at the bottom, I would do about 8" to 9" of water.
This ensures I don't:
1. Dunk hot brakes
2. Dunk CV Boots that may leak
3. Dunk an oil pan or transmission pan
4. Dunk an alternator
5. Dunk a differential (front or rear) that may have a cracked breather tube
6. Suck water into an intake
7. Suck water into an AC drain line (have seen that before or wouldn't believe it)
8. Submerge an ECU / PCU
9. Leak water in bottom grommets that soak the carpet pad.
10. Bog the engine fan (electric or mech) with the added resistance of water.

Can you go deeper and survive? Sure. Lots of people do. How much of that is luck? An increasing amount with each inch of depth you ford above the minimum height of the inside of your wheel.
Following this guideline means that almost 100% of the truck that is below the water is easily replaceable because it is your consumable tires and maybe a wheel, but that's pretty impervious to water.

For comparison, here is my truck tires compared to the wife's sports car tires. Again, same ROE. I'm not going deeper than about 4" to 5" in her car.
