How deep of water can I get my taco in?

I don't like going above my hubs. I have the diff breather relocated, but I don't want to deal with alternator issues sooner than necessary. Wheeling fucks up parts of your truck. You need to make the decision which parts you're willing to have to replace. You might not have issues right away, but you will have issues.

That said, if you don't mind replacing parts, give 'er.

I'll add that mud in the brushes of your alternator will physically damage it, even if you don't experience any electrical issues.

Not at all, this is great. I've been thinking about the air intake, but I don't want a snorkel. Any other, perhaps less "obvious", mods to be done about this?

Gawd there is a lot of pure shit advice in this thread. Assuming you are one of the one in a million Tacoma owners that will ever do more than cross a mudhole or small creek here are the things (for any vehicle) to watch out for. Electronic components like relays, fuse blocks, coils, and worn ignition wires don't always work well when drenched. As in they stop working and maybe they stop during the water crossing. Electronics in modern vehicles are sealed way better then they were back in the day but water always seems to find a path. Using a dielectric grease and/or water displacement spray on ignition components before getting in the water can help. Filling your alternator with water isn't good and filling it with muddy gritty water is even worse. Unfortunately a precrossing dose of WD40 wont help there. Can you disable (loosen belts or tie off for a viscous coupling or switch off for electric) your cooling fan? Its a good idea since a spinning fan that becomes submerged will spray water and drench all your under hood electronics...possibly causing a dead ignition and stalled truck. Look at where your intake is at the fender. Dont let water get in there if the truck is running because hydrolocking the engine can be a terminal problem. Front diff, rear diff, transfer case, and manual transmissions all need breathers that are above your fording depth. Do our Tacomas even have high front diff, transfer case, and transmission breathers? I don't know why they would, they didn't even come with an elevated rear diff breather and launching boats is something many Taco owners do. You have nice carpeting? Then don't get deep enough (or don't stall) to let water in over the rockers. There is more but those are the basics. Since this isnt an Aussie forum, Google is a better place to ask questions like this.

Over the hubs is too deep. Questions like yours make us worry that you are not being serious.

There are not many of us that can take a $25000 investment and treat it like shit. If you can afford to have a second vehicle to abuse to the point of failure, then, by all means carry on.

Mine has to get me to work for the next 10 years. I have to take care of it.

 

My airbox was dry but don't go any deeper than this on the passager side

 

Trucks sold in Australia list water crossing depths because they are actually used to make water crossings. Because they often need to do it.

 

I didn't think he was trying to be mean (assuming we are talking about the user talking about Aussie stuff). It seems that with proper planning and modification, over the hubs is not too deep. Questions like mine should exhibit the desire of a new Tacoma owner to understand his or her vehicle to a greater extent. I'm asking questions that concern utility; the fact that I'm asking what my truck is capable of and not how to fix it should tell you something. With all due respect, don't worry about what I can and can't afford. Honestly, not even trying to be a dick, but asking about amphibious capability does not entail shitty treatment of vehicle, your truck probably isn't really an investment (as far as positive RoI is concerned), and what exactly do you think I'm not being serious about? I feel that your post added nothing of relevance to this discussion and was condescending at best.

Yeah, for some reason the rear diff breather is right on the axle, but the front breather is high in the engine bay, and the tcase and trans share a line that goes up to a breather behind the engine above the trans bell.

I seen a guy get stuck in some mud just past the bottom of his body, water started soaking his carpet through the holes in the floor after 5 minutes.

On another note, just how watertight are the door seals? Anybody know of anybody (or any threads) of people attempting to make their doors/seals watertight?

No signs of water anywhere. I didn't get stuck so I wasn't in it very long.
If you create a bow wave a follow it you make the water is shallower than it acually is
that hole has claimed a few trucks though
