Looking to replace my brake booster and brake master cylinder. There's ABS and no ABS versions for my year.

I assumed I had ABS. The dealer ran my VIN and it does not say ABS but Im not convinced that means it doesn't have it.

    96 Tacoma 4x4 extracab, manual 3.4 liter v6 DLX.

Is there any way to identify whether it has ABS or not other than testing it out on a skid pad?

Look under the hood near ur master cylinder and you should see an ABS control unit if you have ABS. It's kinda hard to explain what it looks like, should be made of aluminum and have 3-4 metal brake lines going to it. I'll find a pic and post it. However, if ur dealer ran the VIN and they say you don't have it, chances are they are correct.

They only said my truck didn't have it because the print out didn't list it specifically as a feature on the print out. And this was a guy in the parts department who printed out the VIN details.

What makes me skeptical is that my Tacoma was pretty high up on the food chain for its year. The only higher model from mine was the SR5. So if Toyota offered ABS in 1996 I would assume my truck should have it.

I did see in the Tacoma Buyers Guide Thread that 03-04 ABS became standard, but not much on info on what trucks ABS came on in 96.

I will look for the aluminum piece though. Thank you.

If anyone has anything to add it would be much appreciated.

Go find some dirt or pavement with loose dirt on top, slam on your brakes as hard as you can doing 25-30 MPH, if you lock up your wheels you don't have ABS, if you get a grinding noise and lose a good bit of your braking power you have ABS

Some of this Some of that
Put the key in the ignition, turn it to the on position, when all the little lights come on like the battery and oil and airbag light, is there an abs symbol that comes on? If not, no abs, if yes, abs. If the dealer says you don't then you probably don't

I had a 2000 taco extended cab SR5 and it didn't have ABS on it.

ABS "should" be factory spec in 2003+ trucks only.
I only say "should" in case someone proves me wrong :p

    Also this....

30 seconds under the hood and you'll have your answer. ABS unit is located in the rear passenger corner of the engine compartment. Only sizable block of aluminum besides the engine.

You can always pull out your rear axle.....if it has abs.....it will have an abs tooth ring...

In all seriousness if you look on your back inner hubs....if it ever had abs there will a sensor plugged into that hub...

Giving your vin to dealer is not sure fire way to find out....

when I gave Mcgeorge my vin.....they still emailed me and made for damn sure mine didnt have abs before they sent me all the rear hub seals and lock rings...
abs will have two lock rings on each side of each axle...non abs

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
Look here on your front knuckle. Inside the yellow circle is a flat spot in the casting. This is a NON-ABS knuckle. If it were ABS, there would be a hole there where a roughly 5/8” sensor plugs
    into on both the knuckles.

    Oldie but a goodie......I personally wouldn't trust a 25~30yr old abs...
especially since most of you don't know what it means to flush out the lines every 4 or 5 years...
I guess some think toyota uses magic fluids and hoses...

    living on a prayer.....

    Bone stock so far!
I learned my 99 XtraCab with the TRD off road goodies doesn’t have ABS when I hit the brakes in the snow and I just kept moving forward. Just like Toyota says in their commercials.

To be fair that is what happens with ABS in the snow.

    Old thread but easy.
Look right behind your backing plate on your truck. If there is a little wire plug coming down into the top of the axle right next to the backing plate, you have ABS. If there is no electrical wire or empty plug, you do not
