You don't know what I do so you don't know what is possible. I am a Captain of an somewhat unique Tractor Tug(google it). Someone needs a particular license set to legally fill a position, so that narrows it down right there. If they have that, then their experience is reviewed. My vessel is a particular drive type that is newer and requires a particular skill set. What we do as a company is outside the box of what normal companies do that fills a niche within a niche as well as still doing all the stuff regular tugs can do. Then we see if they are prior military and what branch. After all that then we see if they have a degree. Doesn't really hold much weight but it tells us what kind of background they may have and where other strengths might be. Then they go through some hands on trials to see if they actually can do what they say they can do. And none of this ever could prove that they can handle themselves under pressure when the shit hits the fan, which it will at some point for everyone in this industry.

If you have figured out a way to tell over the phone if someone can maneuver a 16 million $ tug with 7,000 horsepower while controlling multi billion dollar assets at the risk of major environmental disasters, equipment damage or very easily death or dismemberment of your crew or other bystanders please let me know. I've seen plenty of guys talk the talk through multiple interview processes and then either panic the second shit gets intense or are simply too stupid to know when it's about to be too late. And too late, means your crew isn't going home to their family. Apparently the Captain of the El Faro made it through his interview and we saw how that turned out.

The bad part is, some of the best Captains I've known that seemingly have ice in their veins when others would panic have some of the worst social skills and would interview like shit. This is sadly probably the case for many tradesmen. We're not generally fast talking, shiny shoes and fancy suits that interview well or fit the cookie cutter mold for the first level interview girl that is there to weed out the weirdos and in turn get weeded out. Sorry for the long winded rant, but don't tell me I don't put in the work to sort potential candidates. I was simply stating the obvious reasons businesses do it, like it or not.

Please, stop being so ignorant, laughter is the biggest sign of insecurity, no one gets an education from youtube, but if you had one you would know what sources are, primary, secondary etc. That video is by Ray Dalio a BILLIONaire with a B and explains exactly how the economy works in one of the most simplest ways possible. I mean serious, you think I 'm going to sit here and spell it out for you in crayon when someone else has already done it. What an idiot. Your responses explain a lot. Tons of resources out there for you to read. You choose to be ignorant, not my problem. You're the one in debt.

If you want to measure dicks please upload your MBA and we can compare it to my PhD. You probably picked it up online at a papermill....better yet, lets compare paystubs and see who has the better ROI. Sorry to say but the MBA died years ago, any undergrad in STEM is worth way more.

Degrees are irrelevant to this conversation. If there's anything I've learned, never argue with an idiot, and never try to convince someone who is convinced of their own bias.

    Been a pleasure.

Yeah, that’s why I said generally. Because while I do love to generalize, there’s a new hire, gotta be 20, not two weeks in with that same attitude, and I’m doing my best to keep him learning. Honestly it’s impressive to see and hear this, I’m stoked.

If you are trying to win an argument here, you obviously don't "Tacomaworld" very well.

Oh hell yeah, better yet, let’s upload bank accounts..... I’m game. Are you? Upload a pic of you bank account with a piece of paper in front of it with today’s date and my screen name, I’ll do the same with mine. (Just make sure you cover the account number). I can’t upload a pay stub cause I’m not smart enough to work for The Man like you do.

Now that would be a pleasure.
