I thought camping was pitching a tent on the ground... guess we have evolved. But again, the only "camping" I've done is at Fort Wilderness at Disney with the family. So ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    roof top tent, very comfortable
way warmer than sleeping on the ground if you go snow camping
if i didn't need the storage from a canopy i would go with a low profile bed rack less wind resistance and better MPG
I leave the tent on all the time and find that the wife and i are going camping a lot more these days

Actually neither. I'm running the champion 3100 watt 73351i . It's quite, and love the remote starter. Price is nicer too!

I found a custom solution that Tacoma World user coylifut posted here, He made a video of the camper as well

Ive never seen this type of a truck bed tent anywhere, are these manufactured by anyone ? this could possibly be the cheapest solution for camping in a double cab short box my one eye has seen. ?

.. and no toes exposed to the wild animals at night, ....the thought of that just gives me the willies....

Awesome set up!!!!!! I want a RTT, but don't have many places to camp where you can bring your truck and still be far away from others.

sleep on an angle and in the fetal position lol.

I wouldn't even try it. I'm too tall to fit in the bed, just use my swag or ground tent.

OP. Like smitty said. RTT are a joke. Might as well pitch a tent on the ground and save gas from its crappy drag, and Uber expensive tent it is.

I spent 2 years debating on getting a DCSB (had an AC prior) and I really wanted the goodies plus a 6MT, hence 5ft bed was only option with 4 doors.

So I began researching and talking.... and I think I have a decent idea, and it's all based on how much money you want to spend.

For me, It's about setting up camp quickly, efficiently, being organized, so that way I have more time to enjoy the outdoors I'm visiting.

    Here are some options.....

AdventureKid - Yes ! those first 2 photos above are exactly what i had in mind, this would effectively extend the bed into a sleeper even though the bed's only 5 feet long.

Could you describe how you manufactured that hinged flip out ?

As a millennial I too have asked myself a similar question, how do I explore the outdoors without dropping $10K on gear? Is it even possible? Do I dare go off pavement without the bare necessities I see on *****************? So I began a long and arduous process of researching the ancient art of simpler times called "Camping." I began my research by thinking back to when my parents would take my sister and I out into the wilderness for a week at a time, but being that I'm 26 I found I couldn't quite remember all the details. So my next step was to try and find an Ancient who had experience with "camping" who would be able to explain the subtleties. "Dad, how did people go on overland expeditions before rooftop tents, refrigerators, khaki's, CB and HAM radios, gps, iPads, portable showers, solar panels, dual battery systems, winches, traction boards, LED light bars, long travel suspension, snorkels, sliders, swing out bumpers, and titanium sporks?" Well, as you can imagine, the weight of my question caused his head to sag, and he needed to shake it a few times to clear out the cobwebs. This motion can easily be confused as someone shaking their head in bewilderment at an incredibly stupid question, but I assure you it wasn't. He then turned around and did something that almost defies imagination. He went to the attic and grabbed my old Walmart 2 person tent and Coleman sleeping bag, then he grabbed my old hunting pack and Coleman cooler, tossed in a map of Nevada, and gave me the keys to my old 1970 Chevy pickup. Then he said "Chukar season just opened so give me a minute to grab the shotguns and we'll head out." Then I had an epiphany, what people today call "Overlanding" is the same thing that the Ancients called "Camping" and "Hunting" and "going for a quick trip to the hot springs this weekend," the only difference of course is they spent less that $100 at Walmart instead of $10k on the aforementioned "essential" items.

I like it. I very specifically wanted it to NOT have a bottom to the tent so I could deploy it over my folded-up tonneau and whatever was sitting in the bed. For that it's fantastic.

The one real design flaw though is the rain fly (not pictured) doesn't cover the entry to any real extent. So it'd pretty much suck to get in and out while raining. It's rained on me overnight with no troubles, but if I expected any real rain other than an overnight shower I'd set up my 8x10 silnylon tarp as an awning of sorts.

Make sure you get the model for the LB though, it should give you more room. The SB is a bit tight, but I'm quite used to 1-man backpacking tents and a hennessey backpacker hammock so it's fine. Completely workable for me and a couple dogs.

    LOL. Nicely done.

One of my most enjoyable outings involved parking my truck at the ranger station a couple miles from Davenport Gap at the north end of GSMNP. Paid an AT shuttle driver to pick me up there and drop me off at Fontana Dam at the south end of GSMNP.

Nothing like being 70+ miles from your truck as an incentive to keep walking. :D With 2 liters of water and food for the week, my pack weight was 28lb. When you're having to haul everything on your back you get selective on what you really need.
