Following the OP's original query, I too am interested in the DCSB sleeping variables. My interest is less for regular use than many here, as my future use of a SB will be limited and required for a specific situation that won't allow me to use my other methods of sleeping away from home. I have several ground tents, an fully self contained off road adventure trailer that I built myself with a RTT, as well as a full blown truck camper with all the creature comforts of home mounted in the bed of one of my other trucks (one ton CCLB, 4x4).

To reflect on this RTT debate here:

The folks that don't understand the purpose or need for a RTT are just showing us that their minds are closed to what others find perfectly fine.
If you don't understand why folks choose to spend the money to install a RTT on their truck that may cost a pretty penny, and may absorb a few mpgs, yet find towing a trailer that costs more, and robs more mpgs is hypocritical at minimum.

Each person uses what "they" feel is the best solution to "their" circumstances. Unless they are personally complaining about what downfalls are created by "their" own choices, it really comes off petty to condemn them otherwise.

For real though, taking somebody camping with a shitty ass Walmart tent that weighs 75lbs and a coleman sleeping bag that might as well be made out of tissue paper is a great way to insure they never want to go camping again

Good camping shit doesn't have to be that expensive, but Walmart ain't the place to get gear.

Totally agree. This is why I like REI "garage sales", a couple brands that can be found across the web like Snugpak, klymit, marmot, Kelty, and certain sites like Steepandcheap, Woot, and camelcamelcamel.

As for the OP's question, I don't get own a Taco, but I do have a 4Runner and do a bit of camping/backpacking. When I camp out of my Tacoma, it will be in a 6 person REI Kingdome tent on air mattress for comfort, ease of setup, not being tethered to my truck, and being 90% cheaper than a RTT.

I have a soft topper. I open the tailgate and my feet hang out. Use a water proof bivy over my sleeping bag. Just park slightly uphill so rain runs out the back.
I've never had an issue when rain comes. Also have a tractor supply stall mat back there and use a sleeping pad too.

If I had a soft topper, I'd probably just put my cot back there and drape a rain fly over the back of the topper.

Stall Mat- at $43 what a great idea!!! I'm going to check out tomorrow- curious if it has any strong rubber odors? If not, I'm getting one for my bed and perhaps new sleeper platform I'd like to build. Thanks for the great idea!

It does smell, but leave it out for a few days in the sun and it's a lot better. What I have is left overs from another project it's been great. Keeps things from sliding around in the back too!

    .

Thanks- I'll try it out. At the very least, it may be good for a bed liner when we are not camping back there. I can't imagine anything too bad, horse owners wouldn't put up with it if it did put out too much odor. Man, I bought a set of HF rubber wheel chocks for our trailer and I swear they emit so strong of fumes that you could set off an explosion by storing them in a closed garage with a gas pilot light on nearby!

Mountaineering tents - Big Agnes Battle Mountain series, Mountain Hardwear Trango series. They'll take pretty much anything you can throw at them as long as you anchor properly. I've slept in a Trango, it's a tank, but a heavy one - I think around 9lbs.

Nabbed a Bestop through @eccracer104 . Solo trips i just toss the memory foam and a sleeping bag im there. Im 6'2" and have the LB but all cozied up o can fit comfortably. I refuse to get into a RTT. 2k can almost buy an old class c rv lol. Or a whole lotta tacoma parts.

If I'm by myself, without taking a saw to my legs :sawzall:, id sleep like this in the back seat...

But I'd probably pitch a tent or pull a camper with the wife and dog if she didn't always want to sleep in a hotel.

I grew up camping in the scouts (Eagle 2005) but could never get my family to go camping. A couple years after I quit scouting, my family bought their first camper and they realised how much fun it can be.

I went camping in a Scout. A 1961 International Scout.

I have the Tacoma double cab long bed, and it is much nicer to camp in.
