I use a ratchet strap and strap it to the side of the bed.

Recently bought a 5 pounder, so much nicer than lugging a 20 pounder around.

    So,

I found a couple places that do, or likely will refill
    Tractor Supply
    Flying J
    etc.

Tractor Supply told me yes, but that it needs to have an adapter on the 5lb, that makes it act like a 20lb
which suggests their machine is setup to fill 20lb tanks normally,
or a 5lb with adapter on it "pretending" to be a 20lb
If I can figure out what that adapter even is
Told me they specifically don't do swaps, only refills

and maybe return this milk crate
was gonna pick up a #20 but I already know it's huge

I guess there's only one way to find out what the best tank is (5,10,11,20) and how long it lasts; to get it and try it
    possibly sell later if changing
Or, hopefully, just trade that, as big store #20 re fillers supposdly accept *any* tank from you

If I find one cheap and local I'd like to have one. That would be pretty handy to have. But between the rv and off road folks they are very popular down here.

Your performance will vary. I have 5, 7 1/2 and 10 gallon tanks (20, 30 and 40 lb) for the different propane appliances I have but I wouldn't think you'd need anything bigger than a 20lb if you are just camping. I can get about 5 days out of a 20lb running about 5-6 hours/day on a 30,000 btu burner about 1/4-1/3 capacity (about medium low). That may get you some ball park numbers. I think a 5lb is about a gallon or so.

intake mods, firestone airbags, campershell, backup lights,

the fitting is the same on the 5 lb and 20 lb and all that I know of
they just may be confused about what you want. The only weird one is the same one pound kind.
someone mentioned an adaptor for a little buddy, I got one with hose from tractor supply when they
had a sale. there was a great tutorial in "OVERLAND JOURNAL" and shows what you need in different
courties and how to refill the little 1 pound ones. I will try to find the issues and let you know.

I've seen those advertised but never seen on in person and I think you're right about taller.

Not to get totally away from conventional thinking but a buddy of mine has brought the idea of using a motorhome tank for different ideas. They have different sizes, mount or carried horizontally and may be handy for different ideas...just throwing that out there.

edit: he also uses forklift tanks. Those can be verticle or horizontal but they are a little heavier.

Hey, just a suggestion- I’ve seen a lot of photos of tanks here that don’t have covers over the gas valve outlet. You can usually get a free plastic one at a propane refill station, just ask. They usually have a bunch of those laying around.

Keeping the dirt out might help prevent your jets from getting clogged up on your stove and on other equipment. You won’t have to blow it out or by wasting propane.

My trailer came with something similar to this mount (only one strap to secure the tank vs. two pictured). No idea what brand it is since it came w/ the trailer. I like the turn buckles so you can adjust the tension and I drilled holes through the latch and use a master lock to keep the riff raff from being tempted to take it when I overnight in truck stops and RV parks.

I've found the best place to carry our 30gal LP fire pit tank is to fold down the rear pass seat, and use a ratchet strap to secure it from the rear most seat hook to the side hook.
It's kept it completely stable and free of any shifting, even over the roughest of terrain on every trip we have taken.

    IMG_20230423_121248666.jpg

Would work similarly for a 20gal although I haven't tried that.
I know lots of peeps are against carrying them inside but I've found it's not an issue as long as you keep certain safety measures in place.

I use a milk crate for 20lb tanks too. I have a few 1lb tanks and a refill adapter for them if I need portability. They work great for torches, lantern, or a quick tailgate stove lunch. When they get old, the schrader valves in them start to leak, however.

I wouldn't do that down here in summer. I wouldn't want that over pressure valve opening while I was driving. I have done it in my Jeep with the rear hatch open but not for very long.

+1….use a ratchet strap around them for insurance if I’m only carrying one or two.

That thing is the best $25 I’ve spent, use it for propane, gas cans, chlorine cans for the pool, big packs of toilet paper from Costco, whatever.

Yep, for even remotely hot weather I actually agree. Really the only time we carry it is when we are taking our LP fire pit with us because it's getting in the 40s or below.
