Engine bay -- the compartment where the engine sits. Dryer sheets help as well and don't stink like moth balls.

IMG_9970.jpg I use this stuff under hood, outside, goes a long way. Easy to finish up with, final touches. Made by Honda, 08732-SCP00 Spray Cleaner and Polish, works great.

I freaking hate people that use shine products in their engine bay.

They cause way more issues than people realize.

    "Shine" attracts dirt.
    "Shine" Is difficult to wash.
"Shine" is known to cause belt slippage and squeals.

Rinse the engine off, shine the engine cover separately if you want, but leave the rest of the damn engine alone.

    My engine is quite dirty/dusty.

I never did and never will clean it. IMHO its a complete waste of time unless you want it to look pretty.

I would also never buy a vehicle that had their engine (or undercarriage for that matter) meticulously cleaned.

Easier to work on a clean engine. Dirt and grime don’t fall unit open spaces. And you can spot fluids leaks easier

Ive been using the following fail-safe method on countless cars since 1997 without issue. At the end of winter, I pop the hood look around and check the oil.

Also, I live in Southern California.

This is ok until you need to open it up to work on and have dirt falling in. Changed my valve cover gaskets once and I thought the bay was pretty clean, but should have washed it or used some compressed air before getting far into it. Grime just loves to sit down in the crevices on the top. I make it a point to clean it decently even when changing spark plugs now.

Before coming into the house yes, I don't live in a barn.

I use the pressure washer to lightly spray a degreaser on everything. Let set for 15-20 minutes and wash it off. I use low pressure around any parts that could be damaged and blast it on high everywhere else.

I don't do it every year, just as needed. Had to do it last summer to figure out where an oil leak was coming from. Oil was all over the front of the engine and hood because the fan was blowing it everywhere under the hood.

I double up — a good cleaning is also a chance to do a close inspection of all the underhood bits. Belts, hoses, wiring, vacuum lines, electrical connections, plastic housings, seals, and all the things that are better caught and corrected early on.

The clean engine compartment is a bonus.
