Who buys a 4 cyl truck? Maybe someone who thinks with his head, not his dick when making a vehicle purchase.
Yes I want to get better gas mileage because it's my hard earned money that I have to pay for gas. And gas ain't getting cheaper.
Go ahead and put a jet engine on yours but don't be telling me what to drive. Priuses are for people who don't know basic math and I'm not one of them.
And.... if I wanted to buy a truck to haul heavy loads and pull trailers I'd get a full side Dodge or Chevy with a diesel engine.

I have 32k on my 2010 so its obviously not preventing me from driving it. Two things that i noticed when driving today is 1. switching to synthetic made it smoother, 2. the more miles i put on it the smoother it gets.

Again, i never jumped in here to try to complain about it but rather to validate that i too have a "clunky" tranny going into 1st. I am used to it but occasionally it can be annoying. I dont think it will cause longevity issues.

Im glad for those who say double clutch , but it never has worked on mine. I've tried at speeds of 10 mph down to 3mph. Honestly , it doesnt bother me, but it does go in problematically. Never had that downshift into 1st problem, though i've only had 3 other truckswith manuals.
As far as double clutching and 0 clutching , i drive CDL at work, not as much as i used to ,12 yd dump trucks/plows when it snows. I usually knock ford/dodge/chevy , but as far as the transmissions go they beat this one. Dont expect me to trade in though, it isnt that bad of a transmission

i have the reverse gear problem. All my trucks have been sticks and they all have this problem at sometime. So i just have a habit of putting the car into first before reverse. I do this on just about anything with a manual and wouldnt notice but people tend to ask me what I am doing. IMO its a good habit. easily made.

My truck wont shift into 1st if I am going over 5mph. Learned the hard way a few times. Doesnt matter, shouldnt be shifting into 1st anyways. Just use 2nd and give a little gas. or if you dont like that rev up the motor when you down shift.

i think the problem is that the rpms are at idle but if you are going 10mph in 2nd then your rpms need to be up to match the speed. as you shift you are spinning 1st faster than 2nd was going. I notice when i do this I can down shift at almost any speed. I am thinking that it is possible the motor and trany are just blocking us out when it knows you will be putting excessive forces on the trany????

I think overall it is an odd gearing set up. I think it is geared towards low end power in 1st and then 2-5 are road driving gears. I also think it is more driver error than the truck. you just need to start figuring out what works best and stick to it. everything drives different. Still bothers me that the truck seems to like cruising at 3,000rmps. I am used to driving v8 manuals and many red line at 3,500. I still freak out a little when i see that needle edge 4,000. i just think "shes gonna blow any minute"

LOL. I am used to riding my motorcycles, my 2.7L Tacoma motor feels like a Tractor by comparison, although it does behave similarly to my DR650 single - a little rough way down low, but smooths out nicely pretty quick.

agree, reminds me of my old honda 650 nighthawk. i think you get in and expect it to drive like a truck and have all that low end torque power. so you are shifting fast through your 1st gears. but its not. it is an I4 motor and requires a bit of a heavy foot in the 1st gears until you build up speed.

i switched to full synth gear oil and replaced the transmission, rear, front axle grease just 150mi ago @25,000mi. i did notice that is smoothed out a bit. feels like it rolls easier as well

I have the 5speed sr5 4x4 as well, and I have the same situation, but honestly I don't see them as problems. My last car was 1987 dodge colt vista 4x4 (manual trans) and driving that was a challenge. It also did the 1st gear thing (where you have to be almost stopped) and everybody I know says that first gear was made to only make the car start rolling, so thats how I use it. In stop and go traffic (seattle is horrible and I live downtown) its not a problem to use 2nd gear a lot and I don't think its burning the clutch that bad. As for reverse sometimes the shift box can move slightly. Happens to all manuals in my opinion (I worked as hotel valet and I have driven just about every car from exotic sportscars to a ford ranger with no drivers seat) and they all do it. Just pump the clutch and it should go right in. I see the frustration for sure though, when I drive some of the new audi a6's, they shift like nothing I have ever shifted before, and I wish my taco did that. Sorry to hear it bugs you...

You can get the truck to perform a little better with synthetic oils if you haven't already. I put Redline MT 90 in the Transmission and Amsoil 5wt-30 in the engine. I can now give it gas at a little lower RPM without the growl. Maybe around 500 RPM lower at the most but it depends on what kind of ground of course. Helps a little. I have a 1st generation but it does the same thing. Worn syncro in first I suppose. The Redline helped the most I think. Transmission shifts faster, smoother. Amsoil helped some too. Double clutching finishes the job and I love the truck.

I can put my 2.7 5 speed in 1st gear going 10 or 15 mph no problem.

FYI having a lockright makes shifting the 5 speed totally different. it will grind between 2-3 and 3-4 if your not careful due to the extra "backlash"

You can get it into 1st at 10mph, you just need to shove the shifter hard. Probably not good at all for the syncros. My truck drives exactly like yours OP... I even created a thread just like yours when I bought my truck. The only solution is to got used to it.

Does anybody know if 4.10 gears in my 6cyl will make the 10-14mph shudder go away? Ever since I lifted and put bigger tires, if I'm coasting at 15mph and I floor it, my engine shudders until it gets to like 18mph. Can't remember if it did or didn't do that before I lifted it.

This thread was a train wreck.

Despite his protestations to the contrary - the OP clearly never learned that when you downshift, you have to put your foot on the gas to match engine RPMs to the current speed in the new gear.

yet it still doesnt work 100% of the time...

the syncros in the 5 speed are not strong enough... i think it would work better if 1st wasnt syncroed at all they just seem to get in the way

how many miles do you have? after about 5k or so the tranny starts loosening up. and at that point you can start rev matching your downshifts into first. works for me every time. before 5k tho for me no matter what it wouldn't go into first.

Different manuals shift differently & you have to get a feel for it, if it's that much of a hassle then trade it in. Toyota builds good trucks, and they last forever if taken care of, PERIOD! I have an AUTO & don't worry about that BS.
