Ran K&N in my 1995 Dodge Ram 5.9L when it was new. Two things from that experience...
    1. There was grit that would be found past the filter inside the air box.
    2. While K&N were re-usable, I found myself too lazy to really wash and scrub them they proper way. So they ran dirty.
In the end, I found a new clean high quality paper filter (like a NAPA Gold or OEM) is much better than running with a dirty and clogged re-usable filter such as K&N.

Nothing against K&N! Just found that changing a paper filter would result in more air and cleaner air moving at higher volume than a clogged filter I neglected to properly clean.

I second the motion for good quality paper.

I've been running K&N air filters and stub stacks for almost 50 years , never had a problem . Even have K&N filter on my 600hp Shafiroff racing 427sbc

    Yeah.
If you run in a line of trucks on dusty roads for extended miles, it's easier to knock the dust out of a paper filter than do a field cleaning of a K&N. And they can accumulate a LOT of dust.

I have one on my old Celica, but it still isn't fully restored and will only see pavement.
