I so do not see now this it not the STANDARD. If I'm ever so fortunate to build from scratch, this is the path I'll take.

+1 for wood heating. Wood furnace tied into cold air return. Anything above lowest setting will run you out of the house. Gas furnace for temps above 35*.

Ditto....Hardy wood stove(nonpressurized boiler type) with heat exchanger in existing gas furnace and recent new addition with garage, bonus room and kitchen and 2 baths all hydronic radiant heat. 3000' 1/2" pex, 4 different thermostat zones. I wish I could retrofit the whole house with radiant.

I get most of my firewood free .

I also burn about 2 cords a year , and about 1/2 cord of lumber scraps at the beginning and end of heating season when we don't need a big fire .

Do you have AC? Any central air system at all? For the temps you experience a heat pump (AC in reverse) is very efficient. It should be easy to add if you already have AC.

Forest service sells it $15 a cord cut your own dead only standing or fallen. I only get the ones that are still standing because the fall stuff is rotted & bug infested. Thats why I kept my '95 PreTaco so I wouldn't have to use my new Taco to haul wood. You can see some wood behind the PreTaco.

Arbutus or Madrone as it is properly called , is a evergreen deciduous tree that only grows right on the coast .

It takes 2 years to properly dry , but burns like coal when properly seasoned .

Keawe takes about 2 years to dry also and it burns really good, almost like coal also. And smells really nice!

Arbutus is a bitch to split , it grows all fucked up and twisted , and as it dries it twists some more . You have to split it right away while there is water still in it , or cut it into rounds and just use them as overnighters .

Yeah i found out the hard way about splitting DRIED wood, freakin hard! had to split just a small pile of Ohia trees cause we were making smoke meat, had lychee wood, Ohia wood, Keawe wood and i believe Waiwi wood also know as strawberry guava. Gives the meat awesome flavor!:hungry:
