I realize this is in the 3rd Gen section... but I have used my 2nd Gen to help Search and Rescue operations by hauling team members as well as towing in my trailer loaded with my UTV, which I've also used for hauling team members deeper into the field.

Was house sitting for the Winter in a small, private waterfront neighborhood and came across a tow truck trying to pull a car out of a ditch during a snow storm one morning about 7am. Road is more like a long driveway and tow truck had a hard time (due to its size) of getting the correct angle. I stopped and yanked her out with no problem. Next afternoon she knocked on my door and handed me a bottle of wine for helping her out. As a matter of fact, one of the reasons I bought the Taco in the first place was because after moving in, I realized the road (driveway ?) was practically impassable during a snow storm and my beater Ford Taurus wasn't gonna cut it.

I have spent the last several weekends hauling lumber and building a tool shed for a homeless kid to live in. The kid is my son but it should still count.

I drove several elderly family members 2 hours to Chicago in what was once Little Italy to a funeral.

So ya, half the family dying, half the family homeless. I get to do a lot of helpful things.

One more: I visited a great uncle and backed into a large dead tree. It toppled over. He was very grateful that it was finally down. I still have to figure out what I'm going to do with the smashed side of my rear stock bumper.

    Like, so many.
I've helped some folks move. I pulled a lady out of a ditch on a stormy night. I used my recovery boards to get a mini van unstuck. I'm always going to help when I can.

I'm not pedantic about it -- my housemates let me use their cars and I'm happy to let them use my truck. It does come with a short briefing though on blind spots, turning radius and ass-end swing out (DCLB) behind the rear axle. We have a cabin we share up in the redwoods, and getting in and out of the property is always a 3-point turn and like 1" clearances. They've already rashed both of their cars doing it, so I'm slightly resigned to it eventually happening to the Taco. They're insured up the wazoo though.

I was rescued one time out in the desert from a jeep that winched me out back when I had my Montero. I was so grateful and even offered them some cash which they politely declined. I never forgot it.

Fast forward to my Tacoma and I now have all the recovery gear, including winch. I am always looking to pay it forward when I can. Since last year, I have winched out a total of three different rigs. Once was an old dude in a beat up pickup who was out in the desert picking up brass to recycle. Another time we were heading on the 10W toward Morongo and it was bumper to bumper. Wife & I decided to take a dirt trail which ran parallel to the freeway. About 5 miles in, ran into a minivan with a family that was stuck and yanked them out.

Third time was an elderly couple who jumped the curb at the local Jack in the box. They didn't have AAA and were freaking out about having to pay a tow truck to get them out. I winched them out along with the help of a lot security guard who hooked up my line to their vehicle. All went well and they were thankful and bought my lunch there, but after reading about potential liability with this sort of thing on this site, don't think I would offer again for a pavement rescue. As I now understand, one has to be licensed and insured.

I was wondering if there was any sort of waiver they could sign releasing you from any liability. Any lawyers on here?

Look up hold harmless agreement with indemnity clause. Have it reviewed by an attorney, or just have an attorney create you one, and for good measure, have a second attorney review it.

Not a lawyer, and I don't practice law, nor give legal advice, but am in risk management. SEE AN ATTORNEY. You can be held liable for your actions or your inactions. In any potential situation, ask yourself this: Do I owe the other person(s) a duty to ______________.

I fear the day I come upon someone with an occluded windpipe and I have to trach them to save them. Who among us would let someone suffocate? Yet it is an almost certain lawsuit, and criminal charges for practicing medicine without a license. Still, are you going to live your live knowing that with a small cut you could have saved the person's life? Chew on that one in your quiet moments.

Thanks for that, good info! Don't think I would actually go out and pay for something like this. I would probably ask for a copy if I came across somebody with a legit one. Just in case someone out there was really in need and were willing to sign it on the spot.

Damn you really upped the stakes here...

I make a very good living worrying about esoteric shit like this ahead of time for people and corporations. Lawyers love to sue people over esoteric shit that gets real, real quick. It's my job to be Chicken Little and get you to recognize risk and worry about it so you develop strategies to keep it from happening, and transfer the risk when possible, for when you can't.
