How do you identify stock factory front coil spring paint marks?

just purchased some very nice factory coil over strut assemblies from another member on here, very low miles off of his 2014 trd sport but unfortunately neither he or i know which coil spring assembly goes on the drivers side to compensate for lean. help is much appreciated because when they arrive they need to go on asap lol

Cool that you have a cutlass, I like g bodies. I dont have a clue about springs though.

Maybe go look at your local dealer at the trucks on the lot.

Bumping this... just received the assemblies and they are too close to call on which is longer, ANYBODY with a trd sport with stock suspension care to chime in? Please? The paint markings on the springs that I have are yellow/yellow and white/yellow

 

Would I be correct in saying that since the springs and shocks are already assembled, the overall lengths would be the same, so what I just did was used a micrometer to measure the thickness of one of the coil wounds... Because I was just thinking that overall coil over shock assembly wouldn't define spring rate, the actual spring itself would determine the spring rate... and I found that the one with white/yellow markings was visually and mathematically, very slightly thicker than the one that has the yellow/yellow markings.... so by deduction im lead to think that the spring that's thicker, with the white/yellow markings belongs on the driver's side.... does anyone think I am on the correct track here lol

SCRATCH EVERYTHING I JUST WROTE! Ive found out the color codes, for trd sports and limiteds anyway:

Ok so I went on a late night stroll if u know what I mean lol.... I checked out one of my neighbors tacomas, its either a 2012 or 2013 DCLB limited and his coil spring paint markings are the same as mine, (yellow/yellow, and white yellow) and on his truck the yellow/yellow are on the drivers side, white/yellow are on the passenger side .... so I was like sweet! But I wanted to double check this, so I went around the corner to another neighbors house and he has a 2007 or 2008ish DCLB TRD sport... his springs were Pink/Pink on the drivers side and Green/Gray on the passenger side... I began to sense a pattern here... so it seems like the coil shocks with the same color paint markings go on the drivers side and coils with unlike colors go on the passenger side.... also the paint marks always faced the rear of the vehicle (and if it has the oem yellow bilstein shocks the bar code skew on the shock absorber also is facing the rear of the truck.) So I believe ive figured this mess out somewhat... but this still doesn't explain the paint marks on my original base model springs where all 4 paint marks are a different color lol, idk but im putting the two same color marks on the drivers side and the two differing colors on the passenger since one of my neighbors trucks is exactly the same and the other one follows a similar pattern... I helped myself here but I hope this helps others as well.

 

I know this is an old thread but I searched and can not find a definitive answer as to which strut goes on which side. I purchased a used set of struts from a 2011 Tacoma to level the front of my FJ Cruiser and have one coil with pink/pink and the other with red/green on them. If no one knows for sure I will try as Kyle mentioned and put the pink/pink coil on the drivers side. They appear to be the exact same length and only difference I can see is the paint markings

 

Mine is:
Yellow yellow=driver
Yellow blue=passenger

 

Definitely seems to be a pattern here. Solid 1 colour on drivers side. 2 colours on passenger side. I don't understand why toyota didn't mark all the springs the same colours unless their were changes throughout the years. Maybe different colours mean different spring rates??

 

That's exactly right the different colors mean different spring rates because in the Tacomas the driver side is much heavier than the passenger side because it has the battery that driver and the fuel tank all on the driver side so the driver side front coil spring has a higher spring rate in order to compensate for the extra weight. And I'm pretty sure that two like colors means driver side and two unlike colors mean passenger side regardless of what the colors are that's kind of what it seems like but the base models are a mystery as far as I'm concerned

 

Just picked up a pair of springs off of a 2016 trd sport and both are grey and red. ???

 

Just guessing here.. but if they're marked identically, they're probably identical.

Run them in either configuration, both sides will be the same.

 

Well the dealer is installing them when they do the frame so they should know. Was curious about the taco lean tho

FWIW, I'm 2nd Gen Base AC, and driver side has two different colors. Passenger side has no colors?

 

Just swapped out the stock shock assemblies on my 2014 OR and wanted to share.

Yellow / Brown = Driver
White / Brown = Passenger

For this set up, I just remembered "white on right."

FWIW, when I removed the assembly, the paint markings did face the rear. I
