I have a Tuffy lock box. I modified it to make it shorter. Works good, but probably only for subcompacts.

Modifications are bad and only bad people modify.
I worked on both sides of criminal law in a paralegal capacity for almost eight years and the vast majority of criminals got their firearms from breaking into vehicles (and to a lesser extent straw purchases/borrowing). I had to leave my M9A3 Type G in my car as I was disarmed going to court every day(prosecutors could carry but not defense, who need it the most). I had a safe in the roof of my trunk and put my 86 in valet mode, and removed the ability to fold the rear seats for easy access. The safe was not visible with the trunk open. On another note, my neighbor just had her personal firearm stolen from her car parked outside and we live in a decent gated community.

I would look at what makes it the most difficult to even locate for the average criminal first. As I understand it, the rear seats fold in the Tacos and there is some kind of storage there. That should eliminate many people from the quickest smash and grab possible. I would look and see if any of the Hornady mini-safes are compatible and go from there. My friend drives an Altima and welded one behind the rear seats and placed a small GPS unit in it in case it was broken out of the vehicle. If it takes you an extra 30-45 seconds to put away, it will likely take a criminal longer, unless you’re being watched. I hope this is remotely helpful.

I don’t know what the storage behind the rear seat in a 3rd gen is like, but I rigged up a fat .50 cal ammo can as a behind the seat storage lockbox in my DCLB 2nd gen. It’s bolted to the interior using factory fasteners. It works for me and is out of sight if the rear seats are folded up. Though I removed my rear seat last so now it’s easier to see. Before that, I made a false bottom in the center console and would occasionally put it in it. I had no way to lock it so I only used it as a last resort and for short periods of time.

Depends on where you are. Some states are more free than others. In many major cities guns are heavily regulated so basically only the criminals have guns.

Where I’m at, there are some of the toughest gun regulations in the country yet we have some of the worst gun violence. I doubt most people in my area own a gun considering all the hoops they make you jump though and the convoluted nature of the laws.

So I guess you all don’t keep a “truck gun”? Pistol brace short barrel AR. I have a backpack (get home bag) I carry everywhere. Has 1st aid and security in it. I don’t leave it in the truck though. Anyone have a good solution to secure a longer firearm?

Sounds cool. Unfortunately my state doesn’t allow us to drive around with a gun in the truck. Even if it’s in a locked case separate from the passenger compartment. You are only allowed to travel with a firearm to/from a few designated activities with no stops in between.

No truck gun. I have a bob at home tho. I used to keep an emergency bag in my last truck, a ridgeline but I don't have the same storage space in the taco.

Living in CA, I always wonder if I'll end up getting arrested for just having read threads like this. In L.A. County you pretty much have to have a personal connection to some high-level officials to have any change of getting approved for a CCW and without that permit it's only legal to carry even a properly locked/unloaded gun in a vehicle if you're travelling between two places where it's legal to carry it openly (pretty much only your own home and a range/gun store).
