That looks to have been sucked up snuggled a little too tight in the spare tire area. If you bought new I would almost go show the dealer that. That isn't right.

I just bought my first Tacoma last November I have lifted and put new rims and tires on it . today I went to remove the useless spare that I will never use or need and couldn't figure out how to take it off.
Once again I asked GOOGLE & brought me right back home to Tacoma world. seriously every modification I've made on my truck I've done through the research and education I received from Tacoma world once again thanks. :D:D
& I believe the only dumb question ...
    is the one not asked.

Under the back seat you are supposed to have a long heavy Vinyl bag with a rods inside that go together to allow you to stick it in the mechanism that lowers and raises the tire. Right above the License plate there is a rectangular hole, the rod goes there in about 3 feet to engage the mechanism. You crank it up and down with the rod.

I finally lowered the spare on my 2013 Tacoma PreRunner, 4DR cab, 2WD. There is a silver cone in front of the lowering mechanism keyhole that guides in the key. Made it easy to mate up. I checked the air pressure and it was right at spec. I have had the truck a year, so I guess the dealer must be checking the air when I get the truck serviced.

I raised the spare and put it back in place with no problem, but I don't feel comfortable that somehow the winch won't just lower itself when I am on the road. Is there no lock for this system? Something clicked when I lowered it, but there was no click when I raised it back into position.

I got under the truck with my creeper to locate the points for the jack. This was painful for me since I am old and fat. I see in the manual the rear points for the jack are simply on the axle housing. How safe is that? I did notice the jack had a curved-like surface on the lifting piston, but seems to me the jack could easily slip out from the axle housing. Thoughts?

I never could figure out where the jack points would be for the front, the drawings were not clear to me from the manual or from the diagram on the jack itself. Anybody got a photo of where they put the jack for a front tire change?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

That is where the new cable lock you are about to purchase goes so your tire will not grow legs one night. :)

Recently someone wondered the same thing and started a thread. There is no 'lock' in the hoist system to keep the tire from slipping down. The gearing in it's design will not allow it to slip.

I just bought a set of vinyl covered lock cables and brass locks for rust issues. Wound the cable through the tire and around frame and then padlocked it. I take a small Ziplock bag and a bread tie and cover the lock up and bread tie it closed. Helps to keep dust and mud out of it for a while.

There is this oem lock. Probably not the best but it is something and most likely enough to keep a thief moving on to something easier. My spare is still there..............

Back to the original question where it was referenced to be a "Sake wrench," Is there anything better/available than the stupid 3 piece rod kit to fish into the spare tire hole above the rear license plate?? I had a flat during the day time and a flash light shinning into that hole has little effect. Also those stupid, insipid screws that connect each section of the rod kit is ridiculous! THERE HAS GOT TO BE A BETTER ROD/kit or something/someway to get at the spare tire - c'mon tell me there is something better, right???

Mount the spare in the bed? Weld together the rods? Just use fix-flat and an air pump instead of a spare like they do on some stupid new cars? Just do it once in the driveway in the daylight for practice?

Struggled with hook and spare tire winch yesterday. I wonder if the oem lock was standard or optional. I have a 2010 without it but notice someone has a 2008 with the lock. Also have sidewall scars on my spare.
