It's a bit of a drive. I'll have 4 people to help drive though.

I seem to get super sleepy right after though. Good temporary solution though

I make an 8 hour drive at least twice a month, and i usually drive it at late at night. I'll smoke cigs, blast music, smoke :rasta: to keep me up; but what helps me most of all is just concentrating on the road

I never implied smoking an illegal substance while driving, that would be.. well... illegal.

A guy that I work with naps for about a half hour before leaving for home.

We work in the Glendale/Burbank area, and he lives near LAX, but 15 years ago he had an accident because he nodded off.

I roll down the windows, turn the music up, sing and drink a coffee /energy drink...

If i'm too tired, I prefer to take a 20 minutes nap...

I guess it's kinda hard to distinguish between tired and really sleepy

my point was if you can't keep your eyes open you obviously shouldnt be driving, but I think the point of the OP is less "cant keep eyes open" and more about light fatigue

Even worse. That'll sneak up on you and kill you.
"Can't keep your eyes open" smacks you in the face and you KNOW you need to rest.

Just gotta' be in tune with your body and listen when it tells you that it's tired. Light fatigue, coffee or a RedBull will get you through another half hour or so, but you don't want to push it.

I'll sleep in the truck or find something to do (find a park or rest stop or walmart and walk around for a while).
If I find myself getting bored while driving - I start to think about stopping or I'll call folks that I haven't talked to in a while (best friend, family, etc)

I chew ice, drink ice cold drinks (with ice in them, to chew), chew gum (limited success with that one). The thing that will absolutely work is to pull over (in a safe place), get out, and do some quick exercises... just running around the truck or doing squats will do. Anything that gets your heart rate up. Usually good for a half hour of alertness; more if used with the ice trick.

Also, if you're with someone, get in a spirited debate over something. That will always work too.

I'll stop and get gas, or walk around for a minute. What sucks about that is when I get outta the truck I'm awake but when I get back in I get "zoned" or sleepy again. This is only on really long trips.

Every weekend May-Sept I go to our place at the Delaware beaches. Only 3.5 hours or so but leaving right after work Friday I tend to be a little tired. I usually stop for a big coffee halfway through the drive. Seems to work just fine.

Stop, get out and take a quick walk or do something to get the blood moving. Smoke if you got one.

I once fell asleep at a rest stop with the engine on idle and ran out of gas so I guess take a nap if all else fails :(.

I listen to audio books and chew on sunflower seeds, amazing how short of and. amount of time it takes to fill a 20 oz. with shells

not true, especially on road trips, I don't get sleepy because I am tired, but instead because I am bored, I do this Stuff to avoid boredom, kind of like falling asleep in class

don't drive if you cont keep your eyes open, but, there is a big difference between nodding off and getting tired because you are bored
