How does a 2.4 1st gen compare to the 2.7 2nd gen as far as drive/performance/mpg?

I was hoping to find another 1st gen 4cy, 5spd ext cab ( non prerunner ) Tacoma but there aren't many out there.

I like that the truck is small and light, I use it for work so gas mileage is important. I know the 2nd gen has a 2.7 with more HP but the truck is heavier and I feel like the 1 st gen was a bit of a dog to begin with so my concern is the 2 nd gen will be worse.

I feel like it could be a lose / lose to have a slower truck that gets worse gas mileage but am I wrong? I've never driven a 2nd gen with the 2.7 thoughts?
