No. It means you can limit the tallest gear it will go into. If you put it in S6 it will drive just like D. Shifting between all gears as it chooses. Its not going to sit in 6th.

If you're in S4 it won't go to 5th or 6th but it'll shift between 1,2,3,4 as it pleases.

What? Yes it does! You can start in S1 and walk up (or down) through the gears as you please.

thanks doggman - - so if I leave S mode in 4 will it shift faster and "get up go quicker" because it doesn't have to shift to 5th or 6th?

    OME and worth every penny.
Not familiar with Toyo.'s but on my Dodge car and Ford trucks at work...you put it in D2 and it takes off in 2nd...punch it and it will NOT kick down to first, you have to manually go to D1 to go to 1st. Same with D3...it will take off in 3rd.
Supposed to be for taking off in slippery conditions.

Sure but it's not select a gear. S4 doesn't equal 4th gear. S4 equals 1,2,3,4 as it wants.

No. If you put it in S4 while you're cruising on the interstate and it's already in 5th or 6th it will kick down into 4th and you will be able to accelerate much faster. But you could do the same by just punching the gas. If you're looking to use S mode to go faster you'll have to start in S1 and hold the gears one by one and then downshift as needed. That isn't at all what S mode is for though.

If you just put it in S4 and drive around town never exceeding 45mph you won't notice a difference at all. It's still going to shift between 1,2,3,4 the same as it would if you were in D. The only difference will be it won't go into 5th or 6th.

understood - s4 equals 1,2,3, and 4 but not 5 or 6 - so if it will respond quicker and get up to speed quicker whats the downside of using S mode and limiting it to 1,2,3,4 - Will the engine rev higher or loss of gas mileage?
Again this is my first truck - never had anything with S mode before
    Thanks

A potential draw back of S mode is worse MPG if you keep the RPMs high. 5th and 6th are overdrive gears so they are better for cruising on the interstate. The point of S mode is to give towers the ability to keep the truck out of the tall gears. You need to keep the engine in the power band when towing and S mode allows you to limit the tallest gear it'll go into. It also provides you the ability to utilize engine braking. ECT mode aids with towing as well by pushing the shift points to higher RPMs.

Well, every human alive is in possession of a pretty impressive piece of biology- the brain. Very complex, from my limited understanding..... involuntary is actually involuntary, typing on a keyboard doesn't qualify. Jerking off maybe, you seem to be in the know on that subject. Now "go f*ck yourself", literally...
    Dude..

ok - thanks for the explanation - I will try both S mode and ECT - just wanted to make sure I don't damage the tranni or engine - that's why I asked

My Wifes Highlander has a snow mode button which achieves similar results. The Tacoma does not start off in 2nd if you put it in second.
It works exactly the same as older Tacomas except the shifter has changed. Now if you want it to top off in 4th you have to use S mode. Rather then put the shifter into 4th.

Okay I got ya. Yes you're right. It is not like a manual in the case where 4th isn't ALWAYS 4th.

when you bump the shifter into "S" it goes into 4th but not limited to 4th just bump the shifter forward and it goes into 5th bump again and goes into 6th if you are at the speed that requires 5th or 6th. if you were going 5 MPH and put it in "S" it would stay in whatever gear it is in most likely 2nd.

I may be wrong, but I'm almost positive that "S" stands for "Standard". It just sounds retarded to call it S mode.
