I see. My sister has a new Subaru Forester XT, and that car is a blast in sport mode. I was surprised that it came with paddle shifters. However, after I drive that and get back into my truck, I feel like a slug.

Try those as well as turn off traction control and ABS and you're ready to go do some badass donuts in the mud.

Not shifting at all. I put it in S mode and the display does not show what gear the vehicle is in. Thought it did before.

I beleive it only shows what gear you have it limited to. When you go to S mode it should default to 4, then you bump up or down and the number should change. So, if you go to S mode does your truck go through the gears, or does it just stay in 1st?

S stands for Sequential. Unlike most other cars selecting gears in S mode doesn't actually mean you're selecting that gear (unless you set it to 1). It just limits it to that gear, but it will eventually change gears depending on speed etc. Really doesn't change the throttle mapping or shift points like it would in a typical sport mode in other cars. That's why Toyota can't call it Sport mode.

You selected S mode while on the freeway...?????:eek::eek: Hope you were not going faster than a normal 4th gear.... If you WERE going too fast for 4th, the tranny would NOT shift down to 4th to save your tranny..... DO not shift to S mode over about 50 MPH....

Ive tried it at a stand still, on normal streets where the speed limit is 40 and in the freeway. Nothing.

I don't like down shifting to 4th above 50 MPH.... don't want to rev the shit outta her by going to 6,000 RPM

....this is overly cautious and unnecessary. 4th is perfectly fine at highway speeds. Preferable in a number of scenarios.

    Hello folks,
Has anyone driven in S-Mode, gear #5 on the highway at 70 MPH? If so what are the RPM's like at that speed? In my '08 PreRunner 4.0 Automatic with 285/70r17's I am at 2000 RPM's at 70 MPH in "D" mode. My speedometer is calibrated using a Hypertech calibrator so I assume the RPM's are accurate. My truck does not hunt for gears at all unless I tow my father-in-laws 4600lb boat. That's my reminder to put in 4th gear.

About a year ago I did the Mseo-Mod for the ECT always on. I did the Pac TR7 module prototype. Recently I also moved to S-mode for long trips . S-Mode by the manual is a gear limiter. So in 4th it shifts 1st through 4th until I decide to shift to 5th or 6th.

I shift down on hills for engine braking and cruise in 6th gear. I also shift to S-mode 4th to get up to highway speeds then shift to 6th to cruise. Iv'e noticed improved performance and better gas millage. Also, it is much more fun to drive. Below are the gear ratios.

My only question is there different shift threshold for ECT/S-mode and Drive/S-Mode?

No, The number represents the highest gear you would like to allow. It does not shift on command unless the rpms are high enough that it would have shifted anyway. So if it is in 2nd and 4000rpms and you bump it into 3rd it will shift into 3rd. If you are in 2nd at 1000rpms and bump it into 3rd it will not switch to 3rd until proper rpm for shift is achieved.
