Found an 09 4x4 nearby. Dealer said its from canada but passed inspection and has been treated. Said does show some surface rust here and there...does this look ok?

No way to know with out actually crawling under and inspecting it.
Treated means different things to different people.
Some call covering up rust, Treatment.

Sorry man. You really need to go look.

I’m lucky to live in the South where we don’t have to deal with much rust.
So, maybe the guys that do, can tell you were to look.
Above the cats and heat shields seem to be the most common reported here.
But I’m sure there are other places to look.

    Calling all the Northern guys.......

Yep, I took a screwdriver and started to scrap and pry, exposing the rot, and I took pics just in case the dealer was difficult, but they were great.

They more than likely just sprayed over the rust pretty heavy and consider that "treatment".

Another thing besides the rust on the frame you should consider is seized nuts and bolts that you will run into should you choose to buy it and do your own maintenance. That could be a nightmare in itself and turn a 2 hour job into a weekend long project

Sounds like a winner as long as someone changed the oil once in a while

It doesn't matter what year you look at make sure the frame is good - for some reason they will not buy frames unless they rust and need 2 B replaced every 8 years or so - makes no sense to me but so far I had a 2000 and then a 2008 one with a box frame and the other a open backwards C frame - both rusted - now from what I read the 3rd Gen rust too. Someone at Toyota is a idiot - it has to be cheaper to zinc coat a frame B 4 assembly then to replace thousands every few years.

Agree, when the consumer stops buying the truck then Toyota may listen. Usually, then it's a little late. It may have other aspects, drive train and body that make it a good truck but, this frame issue has been going on for years. I have a theory that Toyota hasn't changed the composition of the frame material or gone to galvanization because it would be like admitting they're wrong.

Toyota doesn't make the frame, Dana Corp does, I guess they're making enough money to not care about the cost, sounds crazy but it been happening for many years.
