We have been getting quite a bit of snow here in the mountains and I am going to say my tacoma w/bridgestone dueler rvts go better in the snow than any truck I have ever owned. I've had fords, chevys and dodges. The only thing that can come close to the taco is a 1999 jeep cherokee I had. I have been using 4wd but very limited. I crossed over one of the most remote mountain roads you will find in WV the morning after the largest snowfall I can remember, the snow was rubbing the bottom of my truck, and I went up and over the mountain in 4wd with no real problem. There is a coal mines on the top of this mountain,I was unaware but the state road was sending a dump truck to plow the roads. I meet the plow at the bottom of the mountain and the driver looked at me like I was crazy. It was a look I will never forget. I was proud to be in my tacoma that morning. My only regret is I didn't have a camera.

Ive got terra grapplers on mine and am very impressed with even the 2wd. If I try I can get it to break loose but then that annoying traction control kicks in. Im truely shocked how well the truck does in the snow and if I have a problem I kick it it 4wd, thats why I bought it for snow, mud, and anything else I may encounter. So if its not doing well in 2wd then flip the switch and carry on down the road

Where I live, we get tons of snow. I can honestly say up until this past fall, my 2006 Tacoma did not go anywhere in the snow without the four wheel drive engaged. This is because of the stock (JUNK) Dunlop tires.

This past fall, I replaced the stock Dunlop tires with 4 new Bridgestone Dueler AT tires. These tires are the BEST tires I have ever had on any vehicle. Not to mention the price for them was the same as the generic ones sold locally. I purchased them from www.tirerack.com. They were discontinued because the new generation of Dueler was released. I see nothing wrong with them and they look very sharp on the alloy wheels that Toyota recently refinished for free (see post in wheels section about this).

With the new tires, I can drive in the snow without using four wheel drive. The only thing is you cannot hammer the gas pedal too much or you will fishtail. The traction I get in four wheel drive is amazing. Recently I went to a state park as I was doing some sight seeing. It turns out that much of the park had not been plowed at all. I drove through nearly 2 feet of snow with four wheel and did not have one problem.

Shoot, I have never been able to get the get the light from flashing. And, I have done it from a complete stop. Could be something wrong with it and now it is out-of-warranty. :-(

While running in 4WD are you supposed to have the RR Diff. Lock engaged *AND* the 4H selected?

P.S. Are you supposed to be in park or gear when turning on the RR Diff. Lock?

    Thanks,

    Frank

I live in snow land Up here in Northern VT. It hasn't stopped snowing in a week. My driveway is pretty steep and I drive on windy hilly roads all the time. I have a 2010 trd sport.
When I was using the stock Bridgestone Duelers Highway tires on sport 17in rims the truck was all over the place in 2wd and pretty ok in 4wd.
I replaced the rims with older tacoma 16in steel rims and New Firestone Winterforce 265/ 70 /16 tires. I think the biggest tires allowed with out some sort of lift or wheel well alteration ( any help with that?) .
Now I rarely use 4wd unless climbing steep hills or in 3+ inches of snow on the road.
I drive pretty aggressive and only have had the rear diff. kick in once and a while (only in 2wd) and have only had abs kick in a couple of times for a sec.
With some weight in the back and good snow tires or meaty All terrains you should be just fine in 2wd and tear up the snow in 4wd like I do. In 4wd I have trouble spinning tires if I try!!
Hope this was helpful and please help me with any info on the tires size max.

with my experience any rear wheel drive vehicle will be horrible in the snow without some weight and good tires. but i dont have trouble in 2 wheel if i have a couple of sand bags in the bed

I notice that a lot of guys seem to want to avoid using 4WD. Is there a reason, other than fuel economy? Just wondering. Me, I flip it on whenever there's any snow or ice on the road.

I run 150 of sand, my topper (another 130) plus Michelin's Latitude Alpins. All in, it's a tank in the crappy wet snow and ice we get on the windward side of the Cascades. :D

Hell, I'll flip mine on for a given corner, then off again 300 yards later.

How about reading the owners manual.
The Locker only works in 4L.

The mileage penalty for the 4X4's comes with the truck. You're always paying becasue of the extra drag. Using 4X4 only drops around 1 mpg.
Personally, I always use it when the road is slick.

I usually load the back up with snow, that way, when I don't need it... it is melted. :)

I still have the stock dunlops on, they were fine during our snowstorm (22 inches or so).

I am kind of bummed out, used to be able to hit the gas on the 95 chevy 4x4 and fishtail the turns on the snow and have some fun. The Taco just sticks and get all kind of traction, so I am bummed out it is not near as much fun. With my new Nitto Terra Grapplers it is way to good on snow. Ice, well is anything really good on ice except ice skates?

In cold weather I like to warm up the drive train a little before switching to 4 wheeling.
Engage 4Hi and wait for the light to stop flashing, stop the truck and shift into neutral. Switch to 4Lo and the light should stop flashing in a few moments. Drive a few feet to confirm 4Lo, stop, shift into neutral. Engage the locker. I don't have a locker so I'm unfamiliar with what that requires.
