These photos were taken when I had the stock Dunlops. Yes, some weight in the back.
I dont know what kind of hills and snow you have to tackle, but up and down this hill and turning around with a loaded utility trailer was a cakewalk. It was my first winter with this truck so I was a little nervous heading down with my tools to work at this cottage but it hardly slipped an inch all the way in 4Hi. I fould 4Lo overkill.
If there is lots of snow, slush or ice and steep hills GO SLOW. If traction is lost and you just HAVE to get up there, back up and take a run! Going down a steep hill on a skating rink is risky in any vehicle. Find another route unless absolutely necessary. Get snow tires. Since I put on Cooper Discoverer M+S last year a couple feet of snow is WAY too much fun!

I've been pretty disappointed with mine in the snow. (08' DC TRD sport) We got 24" of snow yesterday and I had to dig my truck out 4 different times to get it out of the driveway! It does have the worthless Bstone dueler HT's with about half tread. What really annoyed me is the truck is supposed to have a LSD rear and I noticed while I was stuck and trying to back up only 1 rear tire was spinning. The truck only has 38K on it and I hope nothing is wrong with the rear. While coming back with the snowblower I burried it again trying to get back in the driveway; finally got out and let my father in his stock 2500HD with goodyear wrangler silent armors try to get in and barely spun. I need to get this thing alot more capable in the snow!

yea..I have a 08 DC...its a pre-runner and its hit or miss if it gets stuck or not. I have the diff lock..and it helps but still get stuck...i can manage to wiggle it out or throw sand down to get traction but damn...my 96 s10 pickup was better then this...maybe a tire problem i do have the BFG rugged trail which so far have not impressed...

So I've spent majority of my first winter with my truck and have changed my mind. My prerunner does just fine in the snow. The only rough spots are when I'm buried in a parking spot. Even then I can plow through a foot of snow easily. I've come to the conclusion that it's mostly driver skill. Hence why I was all over the place beginning of winter.

I work in the mountians in Utah I drive in the snow quite a bit. My 2009 double cab is a lot better than my '95 pickup was. Mostly a weight thing. Don't trust the breaks on this new truck. Just don't seem to slow the thing down much once they break free. Have been happy so far in 2 wd, but don't hesitate to drop int 4wd when things get dicey...cant afford to bust her up...by the way I drive right through a 5 or 6 car pile up this morning. Couldn't figure out why everone was facing different directions. Kinda felt like lightning McQueen!

Hi Frank... you do know it is in the owner's manual:

4WD TRDs only have the rear locker option when in LOW RANGE 4WD!

Get into L4 first (engage L4 while tranny is in NEUTRAL, not Park). Then, while still stopped, press the RR Diff Lock switch. Wait for the indicator to stop blinking... Move a bit if the first attempt fails... driving with wheels straight and stop again to press switch.

    Holy thread revival
But mine does really well in the snow. Only problem is, no snow.

Fantastic. Been in snow up to 27" with no issues. Ice is more bothersome.

I found the ATM's to be mediocre at best in the snow, great on ice, ok in light snow, sub-par in deeper stuff.

MaxTrax and Hakapallita's changed my life.

Half of it is HOW you drive in snow. There are techniques and skills in the driving in snow scenarios.

Face it guys (n gals)... 2 WD just doesn't do great in snow/ice. With that said weight helps and good tires do make a difference but a 2WD truck will never compete with 4WD or even a front wheel drive sedan. I do OK with my prerunner in the snow but if the roads get real hairy I'll take my wife's Santa Fe into work. Best I've driven in snow/ice was a jeep followed by an Accord. Wish I had better news to report but it just isn't there.

Tires made a world of difference for me. I don't run snow tires, but a decent pair of AT's seem to do the trick

I live on a long unpaved road that get's quite slippery in the winter. The truck was terrible with the OEM tires but now that I run winter Hancook iPikes it is much better. I will say though that it is terrible at stopping...

If you don't know how to drive in the snow it wont matter what tire is on the truck.
