My best was 40 miles past zero.
you have 2 1/2 gal left till you run out when you hit zero. (about)
very old thread, BUT the reason is that toyota thinks were all idiots and have a safety amount left, so you don't use toyota care for fuel.

When your car says 0, you have one gallon left. That’s from Toyota.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
I don't go by cluster gauge but by ScanGauge reporting % of fuel. Haven't gone fully into the red yet but at 1/4 tank indicating on cluster there's actually just over 30% of fuel actually reported. So yeah, there's some fudge built into things but not a ton.

Last month I was in South Dakota and went past zero. I was pulling a trailer and my estimated mpg was wrong! Took 19.326 gal., which with getting 13.6 mpg, I could have gone another 20 miles?! Next time I'm bringing a Rotpax! :D

You could be like my GF and always drive around with the gas light on. Then when it's on she'll drive for 50 miles or so before she'll fill up

Yeah, it is pretty standard across the board. My GMC had about 2 gallons left when the light came on. I also watched a guy do some heavy driving in an F150 V8 for about 36 miles past "0 miles until empty" until he ran out.

Omg some of you live too dangerous for me. I'm always looking for or planning a fill up at 1/4 tank.
I didn't buy a truck to risk pushing it or sitting on the side of the road waiting for the motor club to bring emergency replenishments.

This has been a topic of discussion for a long time. There is actual research on this topic.
With the change in tank materials, one of the issues - isn’t. It used to be a prime concern was corrosion of the tank itself while empty, thus contaminating the gas. Also at play is gas contamination itself. Water and most other contaminants float, and are therefore in the “last” gas.
General rule was always full, never under 1/2 unless necessary.

As for me, I’ve lived dangerously… forgetting to stop for fill up. Went about 20 miles past “0”. However, I was aware that most manufacturers allow for 2 gallons after “E” (reserve).

Yes, this. Change in materials and not to mention the advent of better filtration prior to the pump and fuel standards. Although, a larger concern today is lubrication of the pump which is normally provided by the fuel itself.

My philosophy is that it costs the same amount of money to keep the top half of the tank full as it does the bottom half. I typically fill up when I get to the 1/2 mark to ensure I always have an ample supply. But it has nothing to do with the health and well being of my fuel pump, those are tough little units!

PS: the last time I had a fuel pump fail on me was an old Volvo station wagon back in the 80s.

After you run your tank to zero …next test run your truck with no oil to see how far it will go before engine seizes.report back on findings .

Damn, are gas stations that scarce where you live?

I had 11 miles left on mine yesterday, but I went ahead and filled up just to SHUT MY WIFE UP. (ran it that low for the purpose of getting all the E10 out so I could fill up with 100% gasoline and see what kind of gas mileage I would get without ethanol in it, but she torpedoed that...)

Now, the fuel cannister: yeah, it has some heat sink utility to it, but it in turn relies on gas in the tank to then off-load the cannister's heat. Fuel-to-fuel heat transfer trumps fuel-to-air transfer. I have done too many in-tank fuel pump replacements jobs in my many years to toy with seeing how far I can go before it runs out. Fuel pump jobs that would not have had to be performed had I just filled up when the tank was 1/4 full. (I once received a call from my college roommate while cleaning out my gas tank in my Chevy 1/2 ton during one of these fuel pump jobs. He was flying over my house in a private jet on his way to the Master's golf tournament and wanted to see if I could see him. I could. There I sat in my yard with my filthy hand stuck in a gas tank, and there he was flying in a jet. THAT finally drove home to me the truth that the quality of your life is about all the little choices you make each and every day. Our life's paths, the quality of our lives, differ only because of these little seemingly inconsequential choices we make every day.

Make the choice to fill up at 1/4 tank.)
