I rarely go under 1/2 a tank, and have never gone lower than 1/4.

Care-full you might start to get so corrosion on the lower part of the sending unit and not work proper and give you a inaccurate reading when you really need it.

don't worry the truck will NOT blow up if you go near zero a few times a year.
been doing that for over 40 years and haven't died yet.

I am often taking my chances with 30 miles below empty with ~13-14 mpg.
    So far no problems.l

This truck seems to be quite conservative as far as fuel gauges go. 0 miles to empty in my experience is about 2 gallons left. ~19gal fuel up. As others stated there are some downsides to running it too low, but as long as there are at least 1-2 gallons in there it should be fine.

Most I've filled was 19 gallons in the Tacoma. I've never been able to drive on an empty tank.

My ol' '71 Buick Electra 225 took a fill of 27 gallons on a trip down I-35 thru KS.

    You win!

Dennis Hopper put that fuel line in that holds an extra gallon.

E (Empty line on gauge) is where there is ~ 2.5-3.0 gallons left.
I think the '0 point' is the "miles remaining" computer readout...? So, if there is actually 1 gallon at that point, depending on the model and load, most of us V-6 4x4 owners can go 15-20 miles with that one gallon.

    Mystery solved…
    When it went from:
    0925B419-6A6E-43F5-8ED5-41AEE2D2E72A.jpg

    to:

    9B2C54D2-67C3-4BE9-9DE2-776F6EEA7873.jpg

I promptly pulled into the gas station (a stretch where they are on every corner…).

I filled up and fist time it clicked and stopped, I let it go one more time:

Nice work! Some more confirmation of that 18gal used when the light comes on and 19gal at DTE = 0mi.

Now, you need to do that same experiment until it putters out and then coast on in. With someone reporting 21.4gal earlier, I'm wondering if the actual usable fuel isn't actually more than 21.1gal? Just to stave off the tank users / abusers like me.

To all the fellas saying they never go below A half tank.
Loosen up and live a little.

not a better feeling in the world pressing your luck
And rolling into that gas station sputtering on fumes.
probably would have been smart to get off on the first exit when the light came on but no. You have a feeling in your heart that you can make it to that one gas station you like 34 miles away.
But I’m a gambler so take it as you will.

I wait until it says Distance to empty: please refuel, then go a distance equal to my (tank mpg * 2) more miles. (Usually 28 miles). I almost always fill up 19.3 gallons.

I used to nail 20 gallons everytime with my second gen , but I’m a little more conservative with my supercharged 3rd gen. Don’t want to go too lean:)

I have only ran out of gas once doing this (on my second gen.) I was doing worse than the 12.5mpg average that guzzler typically got. I managed to die uphill of the gas station and coast into the fuel stall to fill up 21.2 gallons

I should say, this wasn’t a planned experiment, but one that just happened upon me. I was traveling out where there are no gas stations and the light popped on. Knowing that I was safe as I was already not too far from my destination, I figured fill up on the return. Having seen sub $2.50 gas, figured I’d wait for one. Once I saw where things were headed… decided to “find out” and document.

I've driven probably like 10 miles after the range hit 0. Even when it hits 0 you still have ways to go.

Those are the best kind of experiments. Ones that are convenient.
