How far can you go on "E"?

I noticed as the gas guage gets lower,it seems to move faster. I can't find how much is left in the reserve when the light comes on. So my question is how far can you get once the gas light comes on?

 

I have gone 30 after the light came on

 

My light comes on when I have burned around 17 gal. so assuming my tank holds 20 I can go around 50 miles. I dont like getting it this low because I've heard its not good for the fuel pump.

 

I could fit in about 3-4 more gallons, so about 60-80 more miles.

 

I've only seen the low fuel light on my truck once- Down here in hurricane country it's a rare occurrence to have a tank below 1/2.

Why drive it down that far??

ive pushed it as far as 55 miles once.... yeah its bad on the fuel pump because the gas is supposed to cool the motor or something like that...had one go out in a suburban, that thing was always on E the pump was $500

 

What kind of engine do you have? How do you drive? What is your favorite color?

Serioulsy, there are quite a few variables. I do not have a 2nd gen, but I had the same curiosty.

First, check you owner's manual for fuel tank capacity. It may even tell you at how many gallons the idiot light comes on.

Next, when you fill up the tank completely, note the mileage on your tripometer (uh, or set it to zero and check it on your next tank) to get an idea of what kind of mileage you are getting. (I've been doing this for months, just save the fuel receipt and write the milelage on it). The, run it until the light comes on and fill it again, noting the mileage and doing the math. If you know you mileage and how many gallon(s) remains, you'll have the answer.

My experience seems to be that there's about 3 gallons in the tank when my low fuel light comes on, so that equals about 54 miles for me.

 

Yea, you shouldn't go below 1/4 tank as the fuel pump is cooled by the fuel as others have stated.

That said I've filled up at about 18.2 before... still almost 2 gallons left. Why test it though.

If you living paycheck to paycheck to pay for your fuel... perhaps you should reconsider having a second gen taco.

 

Owner's manual doesn't say. I haven't done the math yet with a fill up. I've only had her for a month an a half.

 

Try not to let it get below 1/4 tank because it will shorten the life of your fuel pump.

 

Or consider a different budget plan. Things are good for me right now- but I was at the point that I had to start planning trips to make the most of the gas I had and skip meals out and stuff to make sure I had the scratch for gas for the month.

 

X2 It's not something like that, that's what it is. The pump is in the tank. The gas cools the pump. No gas, the pump is not cooled. Keep gas in the tank or shorten the life of the pump. Even at $3 a gal gal gas is cheap compared to $500 for a pump.

It'll get eaiser once the wife's car is paid off in Nov. Not complaining about it, just curious. Doesn't seem to matter how much you make, wife and kids rip thru it just the same

 

You're still burning the same amount of gas no matter where on the gauge you fill it up.. just takes a bit of an adjustment to get your fill-ups at the 1/4 tank mark.

When my light comes on I have just under 4 gallons left... I've never managed to fill up right when it comes on but if I make it in within 10-15 miles then I get about 18 gallons into the 21 gallon tank.

 

20/20 did a segment on this last year. Maybe, I can find it.....
